First Chapter

EXCERPT:

CHAPTER ONE: THE PROMISE OF ANTIAGING MEDICINE

Longevity. Have you ever dreamed of physical immortality? Of living "forever young"? Perhaps the most compelling reason for the recent popularity of antiaging medicine is the age old search for immortality. Since the dawn of civilization, mankind has sought to live "younger longer". The search for youthful immortality led the ancient Egyptians to develop herbs and medicines to rejuvenate the elderly and to help the young retain their youthfulness. Ponce De Leon sought the "Fountain of Youth" in the new world several hundred years ago, an effort which led to the exploration of the Americas.

Modern scientific discoveries and the rediscovery by the medical profession of once forgotten herbs and natural therapies is now bringing the dream of "youthful immortality" closer to realization than ever before. Therapies available today offer rejuvenation through replacement of youthful hormonal functioning, removal of toxic and waste materials from the body, natural stimulation of the organs via vitamins, minerals and herbs, and advanced medications. Nootropic medicines are a new class of pharmaceuticals which stimulate and rejuvenate the functioning of the brain. Nootropics thereby improve memory, alertness, intelligence, and fight senile dementia. Novel treatments and preventive regimens for cancer, arthritis, and heart disorders are now either immediately available or are soon to arrive. Today, the promise of living a long life, free of degenerative diseases such as cancer and heart disease is becoming reality!

One of the most exciting areas of biomedical science, an area known as "molecular biology", studies the genes and other tiny components of our cells. Cells are the smallest component of living organisms. Billions of cells together make up the human body. Recently discovered genes are now believed to control important components of the aging process. One of them, the telomerase gene, may actually be the "immortality gene" which allows certain microorganisms and cells to live indefinitely. Several biotechnology companies are currently investing millions of dollars developing ways to confer this immortality gene to humans, and to delete it from cells which are made dangerous because of their "immortality". For the first time in the history of mankind, we are living in an age in which we can slow the aging process and in which we may soon be able to reverse it altogether. This book discusses many of these leading edge "biotherapies" for aging and aging-related degenerative diseases such as cancer and heart disease....

    telomerase coverage short but interesting

I was looking for some titles that discuss telomerase and found this one. Telomerase, called the immortality enzyme by Dr Minton and the immortality factor by another author, has been in the news recently, but try to find a book about it that is not a "lab manual". I found the chapter in this book on telomerase to be informative, but having been published ten years back, is now not nearly as thorough as I hoped. The rest of the book discussed other topics, for the most part. Things of interest, but not much else on telomerase in the rest of the book.

Following the outline suggested by BN- most of the book is well researched and there are references; for the most part, the topics are clearly presented; I learned a few new things about telomerase and a lot of things I did not know, and many that I had never even heard of before, on other topics that are related to natural health and longevity.

    very readble

This book made some very tough concepts easy to understand. Dr. Minton took complex scientific ideas and made them understandable in this very readable book. I was especially intrigued by his discussions of the various theories of aging, and his own ideas concerning aging and its' relationship to diseases such as cancer.
