We remain a young nation, but in the words of Scripture, the time has come to set aside childish things. The time has come to reaffirm our enduring spirit; to choose our better history; to carry forward that precious gift, that noble idea passed on from generation to generation: the God-given promise that all are equal, all are free, and all deserve a chance to pursue their full measure of happiness.

In reaffirming the greatness of our nation, we understand that greatness is never a given. It must be earned. Our journey has never been one of short-cuts or settling for less. It has not been the path for the faint-hearted —for those who prefer leisure over work, or seek only the pleasures of riches and fame. Rather, it has been the risk takers, the doers, the makers of things —some celebrated, but more often men and women obscure in their labor—who have carried us up the long, rugged path towards prosperity and freedom.

    A memento of a momentous occasion.

    President Obama's inaugural address is presented in this small, but nicely published chapbook alongside Lincoln's first and second inaugural speeches with good reason. Both men represented the nation in times of turmoil, cultural changes and futures that were yet unwritten but may well prove to be turning points in our nation's history.

    The touchstones of Obama's speech echo many themes in Lincoln's second address as well as in the direct manner in which they were written. Lincoln's Gettysburg Address, which is also included here, tells of mending old wounds and giving aid onto fresh scars can be found in Obama's words and his charge to remember the past while looking hopefully to the future is surely found in Lincoln's second inaugural address.

    The final section is Emerson's wonderful essay, "Self Reliance" in which he states eloquently the necessity to seek out non-conformity as well as the courage to look for new ways to accomplish one's self-determined purposes and goals.

    The book is a fine memento of not only this most recent historic events, but those words and thoughts that undoubtedly lead us these moments.
