Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Paula Rohrlick
This adaptation of the Marvel comic book series tells how Bruce Banner became the fearsome green Goliath known as the Hulk. As a boy, he is fearful but kind-hearted. He spends a lot of time reading about science and keeps his feelings bottled up. He becomes a hard-working scientist who works for the army on dangerous gamma radiation. His impatient boss wants to find out how powerful the gamma rays are and insists on testing them, though Bruce is not sure they are safe. As the test countdown in the desert begins, Bruce realizes someone has driven into the danger zone, and he races to the rescue. He succeeds in pushing the driver to safety, but Bruce himself is exposed to the rays. He finds himself transformed into the Hulk, and the army is sent to stop him. Hulk comes to the aid of soldiers who are in danger, and then is transformed back into Bruce Banner again. The detailed, action-packed illustrations have a 1950s feel about them in style and tone, reminiscent of Bruce McCall's illustrations, rather than a more traditional comic-book look. Young readers fascinated with superheroes will enjoy this look at the Hulk's beginnings, and his huge, scowling face on the cover is sure to attract attention. Reviewer: Paula Rohrlick
