Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Melissa Rife
In his secret life as a superhero, Chip, otherwise known as Rockhead, has run into a new opponent: Papercut. At school, Chip seems like a normal "nerd" with a crush on a cool girl at school. However, what no one besides Chip's best friend knows, is that Chip has been saving the day as a superhero. When bully Troy Perkins is given a special potion, he turns into a super-villain. That super-villain, too, is determined to take down Rockhead because "Paper beats rock." Just when it seems to be the end of Chip and his superhero identity, his best friend becomes his new sidekick—Scissorlegz. Because scissors are Papercut's weakness, the new duo finally takes him down. Interspersed throughout the book are several advertisements for Stone Arch products, although it is not clear whether these are real products for sale or not. As well, there is a glossary at the end and several questions to accompany the book. Nickel creates a unique story, but the story has little depth or length. The entire book is basically one fight. There is no connection made between the words in the glossary and their location in the book. Without the other books that are part of this series, "The Incredible Rockhead", this story leaves the reader a little confused. Why is this boy a superhero? How did he get like this? As a stand-alone book, it just does not work well. Reviewer: Melissa Rife
