Meet the Author

A native of Oklahoma but grew up in California. My maternal great-grandmother was full-blood Cherokee, my paternal grandparents part Cherokee. I am happily married to David, a CPA.
I have a B.A. History and a minor in Economics from California State University Fresno, from which I graduated cum laude in 1982. While there (and several years after) I was Community Advisor to the University Lecture Series. A volunteer position, my role was planning and hosting receptions for visiting distinguished lecturers. Among the speakers I hosted and was fortunate to spend time with were: Carl Sagan, former Prime Ministers Edward Heath of England and Benazir Bhutto of Pakistan, former Presidents Gerald Ford and Jimmy Carter, authors Bob Woodward, Elie Wiesel, Jack Anderson, Isabelle Allende, and Sam Keene. Cabinet member Elliott Richardson and Senator Edmund Muskie were also lecturers, as was Abba Eban, Israeli Ambassador to the United Nations, and Wilma Mankiller, then the first woman Chief of the Cherokee Nation. The above is only a partial list. My years with Cal State Fresno's ULS program was an enlightening experience that enhanced my love of history and remains a highlight in my life.
My first book Hollywood the Hard Way, a Cowboy’s Journey, nonfiction, 1999, was published by the University of Nebraska Press. It was reviewed by Publishers Weekly, Library Journal, Booklist, Bloomsbury Review, The Oklahoman newspaper, plus Persimmon Hill, Oklahoma Family, and Cowboys and Indians Magazines. As a result of the PW review, Creative Artist Agency signed me as a client and the book was optioned (and reoptioned) for a movie. Unfortunately this all culminated around September 11, 2001 and funding fell through.
My second book, Coach Tommy Thompson & the Boys of Sequoyah, nonfiction, 2009,was published by the University of Oklahoma Press. The Foreword was written by Chadwick Smith, Principal Chief of the Cherokee Nation. The book was a finalist in the 2010 Oklahoma Book Awards. Because of my two books featuring Oklahoma heroes,I was honored to be included in the Oklahoma Oral History Program (to preserve Oklahoma history) sponsored by Oklahoma State University in Stillwater.
The Indian’s Daughter is my first novel. I have another completed novel The Fifth Season, which is awaiting a final rewrite. I have been a member of The Authors Guild since 1998.
