Overview

Sydney Sage is an Alchemist, one of a group of humans who dabble in magic and serve to bridge the worlds of humans and vampires. They protect vampire secrets—and human lives.

In the aftermath of a forbidden moment that rocked Sydney to her core, she finds herself struggling to draw the line between her Alchemist teachings and what her heart is urging her to do. Then she meets alluring, rebellious Marcus Finch—a former Alchemist who escaped against all odds, and is now on the run. Marcus wants to teach Sydney the secrets he claims the Alchemists are hiding from her. But as he pushes her to rebel against the people who raised her, Sydney finds that breaking free is harder than she thought. There is an old and mysterious magic rooted deeply within her. And as she searches for an evil magic user targeting powerful young witches, she realizes that her only hope is to embrace her magical blood—or else she might be next.

Children's Literature - Cara Chancellor
For Alchemists—the devout group of humans who keep vampire and human worlds separate—some truths are absolute. Vampires are unclean. Unsanctioned magic corrupts. By-the-book Alchemist Sydney Sage, however, is finding those formerly clear lines are suddenly really, really blurry. Posing as a high school student at the elite Amberwood Prep, Sydney’s mission is to monitor and protect two vampires: Jill, sister to the Moroi queen, and the irritatingly good-looking Adrian. The problem? Both have started to feel more like friends than unclean denizens of the night. Then there is Mrs. Terwillinger, distracted history teacher by day and powerful witch by night, who insists Sydney has magic potential that could be deadly if left untrained. When a former Alchemist makes contact with a secret that could upend both Sydney’s mission and her very belief system, she will have to choose between the doctrine she has followed all her life and the growing realization that some rules are meant to be broken. Straight-laced Sydney is hyper-organized, openly struggles with an eating disorder, and firmly believes in following curfew. Watching her struggle to adapt as the borders of her world become increasingly nebulous is at once endearing, amusing, and inspiring. Part of the “Bloodlines” series, a tangent to the popular “Vampire Academy” books, Mead’s newest installment features fast-paced action and simmering sexual tension and will be a welcome addition to fans of the previous novels. VOYA - Loryn Aman
Sydney Sage is doing her best to put her romantic past behind her and focus on her job: protecting vampire royalty. Ever since that forbidden (but amazing) kiss, she is doing everything she can to not only protect Jill, but also to do well in school. On top of all these responsibilities, Sydney soon learns from her teacher, who is a witch, that there is a much bigger problem that puts Sydney in terrible danger. As if she does not already have enough on her plate, Sydney also follows a lead to try to find Marcus, a rebel Alchemist, and what she learns from him rattles her world to the core. Can Sydney handle all of these new twists and turns, and live to tell about them? The Bloodlines series continues with The Indigo Spell, and fans of the series will enjoy not only the new situations that Sydney finds herself in, but also, of course, her ongoing love saga. From a reader's perspective, the amount of pressure that is on Sydney, mixed with all the intermingling story lines, seems a bit unbelievable and distracting. She has to worry about Jill, a witch who could possibly steal her youth and kill her; Adrian; Marcus and the news he brings to light; and the Alchemists, and still make time for her homework. It just feels a bit like too much squeezed into one book. In the end, though, the romance is the shining star of this series and will keep readers coming back for more. Reviewer: Loryn Aman
