Alfred Thayer Mahan (1840-1914) was a United States Rear Admiral, geostrategist, and educator, who has been called "the most important American strategist of the nineteenth century." His ideas on the importance of nautical tactics influenced navies all around the world, and contributed to the naval arms race of the late 19th and early 20th century.
