Overview

“If you were to ask me where I see God at work today,” writes Richard Blackaby, acclaimed speaker and bestselling co-author, with his father Henry Blackaby, of Experiencing God, “I would tell you, ‘In the marketplace.’” This observation has birthed his newest book The Inspired Leader: 101 Biblical Reflections for Becoming a Person of Influence (August 2012, Russell Media), a compilation of 101 short stories and reflections written by Blackaby and numerous Christian CEOs who work for $100 million companies.

Compelling, challenging and amazingly applicable, The Inspired Leader offers a “spiritual oasis” for business and church leaders.

“The business world can quickly parch our spiritual vitality,” Blackaby notes. “It regularly bombards us with materialistic attitudes. The love of money is widespread. Greed, corruption, selfishness is ubiquitous…As we progress through the week, the spiritual “high” we experienced on Sunday can quickly morph into a desolate wilderness by Friday.”

Rife with Scripture, each reflection offers a real-life scenario involving prolific business people of the past and present. Drawing on lessons from people such as Bernie Madoff, Malcom Gladwell, Henry Ford and Walt Disney, Blackaby and the contributors tie everything back to the Lord and the dependence leaders need to put in Him.

Every story ends with three thought-provoking questions for reflection designed to take a deep and honest look into the reader’s faith journey inside and outside of the workplace. The questions are immensely challenging, since Blackaby and prominent leaders are well-aware of the temptation to devote one’s life to work.

“One of the greatest challenges for business people is to maintain a close walk with Christ while they are immersed in the frenetic demands and schedule of the marketplace,” Blackaby says. “With all the demands upon us, how can we carve out adequate time to spend with our Lord?”

Blackaby is upfront about the fact that The Inspired Leader won’t change someone, but the Holy Spirit can.

“A devotional cannot change your life,” he writes. “But the Holy Spirit, who is with you as you read, can. Welcome His involvement into your life. Eagerly respond to His promptings. Trust Him regardless of how impossible His word may appear to you. And obey. Immediately.”

What I especially like about Richard Blackaby’s new book is that we, the readers, are both challenged and inspired. The questions at the end of each chapter challenge us to get serious about living out our faith in the workplace. The stories inspire us to live our lives at the highest level possible. This is one of those books that we will read and reread!

President, Focus on the Family - Jim Daly
Richard Blackaby’s book accomplishes two important things. First, it encourages Christian leaders to take a good look at their own lives and motivations—but not for too long. Second, and more importantly, it helps them take that attention off of themselves, and turn their gaze heavenward.
