There are no heroes in the book, no villains, just people teetering between hope and nihilism, some more ethically evolved than others. If fiction truly is, as Bill Cosby once said, ‘a wish that one attempts to dream into existence,’ then this just proves that Louisa May Alcott was never a horse.
