The biggest problem with living in an old commercial building is light. Lofts may not have skylights; many commercial spaces only have windows along one side; and, since sunlight ... provides the major source of illumination, industrial and more modern commercial spaces can be--and often are--downright dingy. -- The dramatic, sprawling character of the open loft, while it might reflect the nonconformist artistic aspirations of its occupant, is just as often a practical necessity: partitions would get in the way of what precious light exists. Not only does The International Book of Lofts trace the rise of lofts--from practical workshops-cum-living spaces for artisans and artists to the self-important style statements of writers, fashion designers, and accountants--it is also a photographic compendium of solutions to the antagonistic problems of light, space, and privacy. Ranging widely from city to city, from minimalist temple to faux-Medici palazzo, the authors even find room to consider those purpose-built houses and apartments that borrow from the loft aesthetic.-- NEW oversize hardcover book with jacket and Mylar protective book cover. With more than 350 color photographs and fifteen architectural drawings , this 256 page book represents some of the most stunning and ingenious residential lofts in New York~ Read more Show Less

'I.B.O.L.' showcases, explains the modern loft well!!!

The IBOL is one hardcover that never leaves my coffee table- besides offering the aspiring loft-dweller useful design ideas for the loft to be, it also does a masterful job of explaining the origin of the modern loft, and much more. Though concentrating mainly on NYC lofts, of course, the book does also highlight lofts from major cities from around the USA and the world. The photography and blueprints in the book are second to none, and the binding and paper quality is top-notch. This book is a MUST for any interior designer, residential architect, remodeler, or even aspiring loft-liver, and definitely worth its not especially inexpensive price.
