Editorial Reviews

VOYA - Sandra Stewart-Cole
The Internet is a surprisingly slim volume of accurate, vital information about getting hooked up to the Internet and navigating cyberspace for the very first time. The only hitch is that it is geared specifically for Windows 95 users. Beginning with a cursory description of the Internet, its history and possible uses, this book gets down to brass tacks by describing step-by-step the process of getting on-line. Many pages are devoted to installing the hardware and software applications needed to connect and include step-by-step instructions, illustrations of computer screens, and photos of modems, cables, and chips. Checklists of key questions to ask an Internet service provider (ISP), information needed to log on for the first time, and a two-page spread clearly defining the difference between an ISP and an on-line service provider (Compuserve, AOL) are clear, well-laid-out, and easy to understand at any level. Also included are accurate but shallow descriptions and instructions for use of e-mail, FTP, Web browsing, Telnet, Gopherspace, Newsgroups, IRC, on-line games, and virtual worlds. Basic Netiquette is discussed, and a small sidebar barely touches on offensive material that might be on-line. An extensive appendix includes lists of the big on-line service providers, a troubleshooting guide, a glossary of terms, and a three-page listing of Web addresses for gopher, newsgroups, irc, shareware sites, and on-line services. A good buy at the price, this book is an excellent beginners resource for teens and adults, even non-Windows 95 users. Glossary. Index. Illus. Photos. Biblio. Appendix. VOYA Codes: 4Q 3P J S (Better than most, marred only by occasional lapses, Will appeal with pushing, Junior High-defined as grades 7 to 9 and Senior High-defined as grades 10 to 12).

YAAn introduction to the Internet using Windows 95. Featuring the familiar DK style of graphics, the book explains the topic through a broad overview of general information, hardware and software requirements, and basic steps needed to surf the Net by using either of the two major browsers discussed. Specifically written for novices, the text will not appeal to anyone who has searched the Internet even on a limited basis. However, beginners may find the organized presentation to be helpful. Parts of Windows 95 screens are placed on each page to guide readers through the various steps of each new search skill or procedure. These partial screens are small, require careful study, and do not contain the entire contents of each toolbar or screen. Downloading various files is the major emphasis of the second half of the book. A glossary covers some basic definitions, but the meanings of many of the acronyms are not always apparent until several definitions are read. The four appendixes briefly treat the major on-line services, simple troubleshooting, common file formats, and a listing of Web pages. Suggested as a beginner's point of reference, this title should enable YAs to move quickly on to additional Internet-use texts.Pam Johnson, Fairfax County Public Library, VA
