This book gives a cursory overview of the history and current status of the Internet, electronic mail, newsgroups, using the Internet to access remote computers (Telnet and file transfer protocol), and searching the Internet. It also provides a broad overview of the entire field of medical informatics, a selected bibliography of books and articles, an extensive glossary of computer terminology, and an extensive annotated listing of health-related Internet resources listed by URL. It is intended to introduce physicians to the structure and content of the Internet and teach them how to obtain useful information. The audience includes all physicians. The introductory chapters are brief, and it is easy to get a working overview of the Internet in less than an hour. The annotated listing of World Wide Web sites is a rich source of medically useful content. Competing books include general audience texts such as The Whole Internet Catalog or Internet for Dummies. The Internet, particularly the Web, is rapidly becoming integrated into the practice of medicine. This text, although superficial and already partially dated, can be a quick introduction for the neophyte.
