The Iron Man's Strong Stage Presence

Just two days before The Who’s guitarist Pete Townshend was getting ready to do a mini-tour for the 20-year anniversary of the band’s rock opera TOMMY, he released his ninth solo album, The Iron Man, a musical based on a children’s story by Ted Hughes. While it was somewhat disappointing that Townshend did not support this 1989 effort with a solo tour like he did for his 1993 release Psychoderelict, the album still managed to give both Who and Townshend fans alike what they’ve always expected from their hard rock songwriting champion – a complex story line, innovative arrangements, a love song in “Was There Life”, both a Who original (“Dig”) and a Who cover (“Fire”) tune, and a Townshend classic in “A Friend Is A Friend.” Guest artists such as John Lee Hooker and Nina Simone make solid contributions as well, but it is Townshend’s continued desire to expand his musical horizons that make it work. Although The Iron Man has yet to make it to the stage as originally intended, Townshend eventually got a taste of Broadway success with TOMMY. So with that in mind, perhaps Townshend will revisit The Iron Man and relaunch this effort one day for musical theater (and rock) fans everywhere.
