Overview

Have powerful market trends or uncontrollable events ever delayed or derailed your organization's growth? This book offers you new concepts and improved tools to anticipate and convert such forces into powerful allies to help you exceed, not merely achieve, your goals, even in the most challenging environments.

Or are you an entrepreneur starting a new business? This book demonstrates how to establish a trajectory to flourish by harnessing whatever the unstoppable and unpredictable forces you may encounter, whether in the traditional or digital economy.

The authors present new ways to recognize and understand the forces that are impacting you so you can develop the right vision, and implement the correct strategy to consistently and effectively turn them to advantage. Rejecting old habits such as expending resources to combat or neutralize forces over which you cannot control, The Irresistible Growth Enterprise instead describes revolutionary, yet common sense, management principles that will lead you to breakthrough gains. It also explains how to spread the necessary skills throughout your organization in order to enjoy the highest level of effectiveness.

Irresistible forces come in many forms including exponential technological development, frequently changing and ever more demanding customer expectations, rapid shifts in the economy, new regulations, fluctuating financial and currency markets, as well as the emergence of new competitors and increasing price pressures as the pace of globalization accelerates. Companies that have ridden such forces well in the past — such as Microsoft, Cisco Systems, Starbucks, and AOL — have grown from startups to billion dollar sales corporations in ever shorter periods of time.

Which forces will be most important for your organization tomorrow? How can they propel your business to irresistible growth? While you cannot accurately predict their direction or timing, applying the principles of The Irresistible Growth Enterprise will enable you to position yourself to always benefit quickly from shifts, and open an ever-expanding lead over your competitors. Here are new questions you need to ask yourself about your business, new ways to answer them, and new processes to employ to pursue your winning course.

Tomorrow's leaders will be those who excel at using all irresistible forces to best advantage. The Irresistible Growth Enterprise offers you the key to grasping your full potential for immediate and sustained breakthroughs.

    A reviewer

The authors lay out a road map for managers that, if followed, will permit them to take advantage of forces beyond their control. The book explains and teaches how senior managers can benefit from flexibility when they confront irresistible forces and provide a set of principles for shaping vision, strategy, tactics, management process and organizational structure. You will be able to identify external factors and obsolete ways of thinking that may be limiting your progress and success. This is a brilliant and thought-provoking book that discusses the nature of irresistible growth enterprises, that is, those able to routinely employ the momentum of unstoppable external forces, such as technology advances and shifts in markets. Such agile organizations can use these forces as sources of power or energizers for creating and implementing 2 000 percent solutions, namely ones that produce 20 times or more the benefit or speed of the average person.

    Breakthrough Gains from Unstoppable Change

Irresistible forces are unstoppable events and forces that shape our opportunities and challenges. This remarkable resource will enable you to move rapidly ahead of competitors by utilising powerful trends to best advantage. Learning to be flexible is one of management's toughest challenges. The Irresistible Growth Enterprise shows you how to be adroit and energised by unexpected changes. Tomorrow's leaders will be those who excel at using all irresistible forces to best advantage. The Irresistible Growth Enterprise offers tou the key to grasping your full potential for immediate and sustained breakthroughs. Rather than living optimistically in the vague hope that neither negative job events will happen to you, you should always be prepared to see the events for what they are -opportunities for you to flourish. The fundamental premise of the book is that no matter how successful you and your organisation are, you are performing at a modest level compared to the potential you can unleash through adopting the irresistible growth enterprise. The barrier to irresistible growth is not unstoppable, uncontrollable external changes, but fixed and frequently unexamined ideas of how to respond to these changes. Companies that have ridden such forces well in the past have grown from startups to billion dollar sales corporations in ever-shorter periods of time. Making quick and best use of rapid changes in powerful conditions noone can control is the key to becoming an irresistible gropwth enterprise. By uitilising the proceses presented in this book, you can learn to catch the full benefit of today's volatile and rapidly changing forces and spur your enterprise on to greater and rapid growth than ever before. To help you achieve irresistible growth this book shows you how to choose actions that will put you in the right place with the right resources to benefit from powerful trends, regardless of their sources or direction. The Irresistible Growth Enterprise will show you how to use all those forces instead of trying to avoid some of them. The Irresistible Growth Enterprise has a serious and important purpose: to make you and your organisation much more successful by having you ask and answer new and better questions than you have been using to analyse and plan your activities. Unlike most business books the Irresistible Growth Enterprise focusses on what new things to do rather than on how to improve existing practices. This book shows you how to harness the key lessons and other useful concepts and tools in one integrated process, that will improve your performance across a broad range of activities from creating a vision, to leadership to implementation. Change is an inevitable consequence of staying in business these days. This book leads you to an understanding of the drivers of that change and provides guidance in turning changes into sustainable competitive advantage.

Irresistible Growth Enterprise: Breakthrough Gains from Unstoppable Change

As a board member of one Internet company and an advisor to three others, I can attest to the importance of discerning trends accurately. Most of the failures in high tech can be attributed to misjudgements about the market and competitive response. This book gives entrepreuners the tools to set their direction for true success. During my career as CFO of companies with over $7 billion in revenues, I learned many of the lessons the hard way. Don Mitchell and Carol Coles have given the secret of great success for anyone to read. I recommend it to all.

Irresistible Growth Enterprise: Breakthrough Gains from Unstoppable Change

History is replete with companies done in by forces beyond their control. History also celebrates the rare examples of executives who turned these 'irresistible' forces to their great advantage. Can executives of companies see the wave soon enough, catch and ride (read manage) it to sustained growth, rewarding themselves, employees, customers and shareholders along the way? In their new book, The Irresistible Growth Enterprise: Breakthrough Gains from Unstoppable Change, authors Donald W. Mitchell and Carol Coles - no strangers to this publication - lay out a road map for managers that, if followed, will allow them to take advantage of forces beyond their control. Put out by Stylus Publishing, LLC, it is available at bookstores for $27.50. Authors of the popular The 2,000 Percent Solution, Mitchell and Coles show how CEOs can benefit from flexibility when they confront irresistible forces and provide a set of principles for shaping vision, strategy, tactics, management process and organizational structure. The book identifies external factors and obsolete ways of thinking. For example, 'companies that strategize only to optimize the forces when they are positive, will face grave difficulties when the forces shift directions,' says Mitchell. A lack of understanding can lead to 'inappropriate action or no action,' the authors suggest in their book. In separate chapters, they describe a wide range of stalls commonly faced by companies. Overcoming Stalls and Taking Actions These include a lack of direction; wishful thinking that favorable conditions will return; a sense of helplessness about actions to take; a defensive reaction and denial of the seriousness of the forces; relying only on the company's resources to handle the situation; covering up problems and 'throwing in the towel'; being too independent and believing they can succeed; being overly optimistic about succeeding; underestimating the impact. Mitchell and Coles set out eight steps that will allow companies to manage these irresistible forces successfully: 1) Recognize how measurements can help your company identify and understand more about irresistible forces; 2) use your own leading indicators to anticipate shifts in irresistible forces; 3) identify the future best practices for locating, anticipating and adapting to change in irresistible forces; and 4) extend your vision to accomplish best practices beyond anyone else in the future; 5) identify the ideal best practices for benefiting from irresistible forces; 6) determine how to operate close to ideal best practices for locating, anticipating and adapting to your irresistible forces; 7) enhance your people's ability to achieve the benefits of irresistible force management; and 8) repeat steps one through seven for improved effectiveness in using the management process. Last, the authors urge readers to 'embrace the forces,' encouraging managers to 'seek out the irresistible forces' as a basis for early action. Survival, growth, and personal opportunity are at stake and at hand. They lay out a course of action for taking the lead inside your company and mobilizing people. A chapter personalizes the entire process for each reader.

Irresistible Growth Enterprise: Breakthrough Gains from Unstoppable Change

This is a thoughtful and thought-provoking book that examines the nature of irresistible growth enterprises-those able to routinely employ the momentum of inexorable external forces, such as technology advances and shifts in markets. Such agile organizations can use these forces as tailwinds (sources of power or energizers) for creating and implementing 2.000 percent solutions-ones that produce 20 times or more the benefit or speed of the run-of-the-mill variety. Mitchell and Coles, authors of 'The 2,000 Percent Solution,' explain that to benefit from irresistible forces an organization must ALIGN itself with them (like a pivoting windmill with the wind), break itself of bad thinking habits that block or evade action (discussed in considerable depth), and, using an eight-step process (a chapter is devoted to each step) replace these hobbling habits of the mind with desirable, action-oriented ones. In a nutshell, the challenge is to (1) identify, anticipate, adapt to, and, in some instances, create irresistible forces; (2) learn to flexibly align to them; and (3) develop capabilities to strengthen the enterprises's power to act. Lively, highly readable, well constructed, insightful content make this a most valuable book. Highly recommended.

Irresistible Growth Enterprise: Breakthrough Gains from Unstoppable Change

The authors' The 2,000 Percent Solution created well-deserved praise and continues to be a bestseller. In this new book, they develop in much greater depth many of the same ideas introduced in the previous book. For example, their concept of what they call 'Irresistible Force Stalls' which are, in effect, various strategies by which to deny or attempt to delay unstoppable change. 'Irresistible Forces' include the usual suspects: new technologies, improved communications, the weather, demographics, consumer preferences, and economic conditions. Here are some of the questions which, the authors correctly suggest, every organization must address: 1. Which irresistible forces are now having the greatest impact (positively or negatively) on our organization? 2. What are the nature and extent of that impact? (eg increased market share or depletion of resources) 3. What don't we now know that we need to know about these irresistible forces? 4. Given our answers to #1 and #2, what are we now doing that is effective? Why? What isn't? Why not? 4. Today, what remain our most serious unsolved problems? Why? 5. Which irresistible forces will in all probability have the greatest impact on our organization in the future? (eg tomorrow) Why? 6. What don't we now know that we need to know about these irresistible forces which are likely to develop? 7. What must we do (NOW) to prepare for them? 8.. How can we more quickly and more accurately measure, anticipate, create, and manage irresistible forces that have (or will have) the greatest positive impact on our organization? The authors organize their material as follows: In Part One, 'Irresistible Force Stalls -- Causes and Solutions', they examine various strategies which attempt to deny or at least delay unstoppable change; in Part Two, 'Irresistible Force Management', they thoroughly explain HOW to avoid or overcome barriers (eg stalling strategies) to organizational growth and prosperity. They offer an 'Eight-Step Process', devoting a separate chapter to each. For example, 'Step Three: Identify the Future Best Practices for Locating, Anticipating, and Adapting to Changes in Irresistible Forces.' The Chinese character for the word 'crisis' has two entirely different meanings: peril and opportunity. In the Epilogue, the authors urge their reader to 'embrace change' as an exciting opportunity rather than fear or resent it as an unwelcome disruption. Read and then re-read this book with meticulous care, then select whatever seems most appropriate to your own organization's current and imminent needs. Years ago, Michael Kami was among the first to insist that, in the contemporary business world, change is the only constant. That is even truer now than it was then. All organizations experience (and will continue to experience, at ever-increasing velocity) unstoppable change. Most of those which understand irresistible forces and then respond effectively to them will probably survive. Those organizations which themselves become irresistible forces will dominate, if not obliterate, their competition. After you read this brilliant book, read or re-read The 2,000 Percent Solution. Then the most difficult task awaits: Initiating and then sustaining appropriate action. In the final paragraph of their book, the authors wish you 'Good Luck' as you proceed...and so do I.

Use All Irresistible Forces to Advantage!

This is a useful book for those of us trying to grow small companies in the face of unrelenting challenges. It goes beyond a description of the issues and another set of problem-solving techniques to provide an integrated approach to using the irresistible forces in the business environment to our advantage. As CEOs we need to have a holistic view of our business and our markets. We need to see the system. I found 'The Irresistible Growth Enterprise' helpful and I am recommending it to the other CEOs in my peer groups.

Irresistible Growth Enterprise: Breakthrough Gains from Unstoppable Change

The Irresistible Growth Enterprise is a breakthrough work and a millennium message from two of the truly gifted business minds of our times. The perspective and information in this book is of equal importance to the CEO, CFO, Corporate Director, executive, manager, supervisor, sole practitioner, first time entrepreneur, or student at any level. This is more than a 'how to' book yet you may use it to work through what you must do to grow, thrive, change, and survive into the new century. It is more than a management technique book, yet the techniques introduced and developed here may be used as a guide for any who must manage to manage into the turbulent and exciting times ahead. Among the 'irresistible forces' with which we must deal are such events as globalization, market fluctuations, economic surges and reversals, new technologies and their economic impacts, natural events - weather and catastrophes, demographic changes, and the myriad aspects of human unpredictability. Carol Coles and Don Mitchell tell us that 'Most people see irresistible forces as random factors or inconveniences, but The Irresistible Growth Enterprise will instead show you how to use all those forces instead of trying to avoid them.' This principle, at once ancient and modern, is essential to both business health and personal development. The principles and practices in this book are more than mere ideas. They are the culmination of practical gleanings, over decades, in close business and interpersonal relationships with an astounding number of the nation's top executives dealing with real-time irresistible forces. The Irresistible Growth Enterprise is required reading if you wish to deal effectively with the geometrically increasing velocity of change and development facing all of us today. As Carol Coles and Don Mitchell say, 'This multiplier effect will increasingly happen with all irresistible forces, and this is the key insight upon which you must act now.' Irresistible Growth Enterprise: Breakthrough Gains from Unstoppable Change

There are huge winners and losers as the structure of business is entirely reinvented on a massive scale. The question we're all asking ourselves right now is, 'Which side of the wave are we on?' This remarkable book, The Irresistible Growth Enterprise, deals directly with the issue of harnessing these kinds of tremendous outside forces to our advantage. The ideas -- taken from real companies and real people --- will help you to tap these forces to drive your enterprise and yourself forward. It's a practical, realistic approach to 'catching the wave,' achieving leadership, and staying ahead.

    Made A Difference

Reading The Irresistible Growth Enterprise made a difference in my not only thinking about the best practices around enterprise-wide change but, importantly, it helped me to look from a more objective perspective at the 'irresistible' forces to deal with only the immediate areas being affected by change and not the total possibilities change presents. The best practices discussed hit home and I could immediately relate to situations in my organization and I might think differently about change happening more effectively and faster. Definitely a book you want to keep at hand and go back to over and over again.
