Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
A doctor of naturopathic medicine, Wangen (founder, IBS Treatment Ctr.) suggests that the treatment for irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) needs to be tailored to the individual and that patients should consider food allergies as a cause or submit to testing for bacteria, yeast, or parasites to effect a cure. He includes a bibliography of 51 citations, 34 of which deal with pediatrics-unsettling, as pediatric physiology is obviously different from adult physiology. Although the book is clearly written and contains helpful background information on IBS, it largely represents a treatment methodology available at Wangen's Seattle-based clinic. Patients could ask for the treatment from their own practitioners, but justifying it would be difficult in today's HMO-driven world. Librarians seeking to expand this area of their collection should instead consider Nicholas J. Talley's Conquering Irritable Bowel Syndrome: A Guide to Liberating Those Suffering with Chronic Stomach or Bowel Problems. Not recommended.-Cleo Pappas, Lib. of the Health Sciences, Univ. of Illinois at Chicago Copyright 2006 Reed Business Information.
