Overview

Genre: LGBT Contemporary

Shaw is in Fiji to sell a stolen painting to the crime boss, Vornis. It will be the deal of a lifetime, if Shaw can pull it off. But then Vornis parades his latest toy around in front of him--a captured DEA agent whose time is running out. It's none of Shaw's business, and it doesn't matter that under any other circumstances Lee would be exactly Shaw's type: he's young, he's hot, and he might even have a personality if they hadn't beaten it out of him. Too bad there's no way Lee is getting off the island. Too bad there's nothing Shaw can do for him. And too bad there are some lines that even Shaw won't cross.

Keeping his hands off Lee proves harder than he thinks, but Shaw's not stupid enough to fall for the tortured captive of a dangerous crime boss, is he? If he did, it wouldn't be just his job he would be risking--it would be his life.

This has to be one of the most twisted, disturbing, interesting, can’t put it down but I’m afraid to turn the page, books that I have read in a very long time. I couldn’t stop reading it even though parts of me wanted too. I HAD to find out what was going to happen, I had to know what the deal was. I couldn’t just stop reading it because then I knew it would torture me even more not knowing what was going on.
There really isn’t anything in detail I can talk about when it comes to this book because there are some massive important things that happen, and I don’t want to give anything away. I can say though that Ms. Henry has a way with words that was able to create these characters to where even the evil ones, you couldn’t help but get into their heads a bit while reading. And while that was an amazing skill, it was also very freaky as well!
Lee and Shaw were some amazing characters. The strength that each of them has, for completely different reasons, is amazing in and of its own. It was hard NOT to connect with Lee in some degree and I kept cheering for him throughout the story.
Overall, I would say that if you are looking for a complete mind-twist of a book, then you should really check this one out.

    Should definitely read!

After reading Lisa Henry's Dark Space, I didn't know what to expect from The Island, except that it was going to be an emotion-packed read. And boy, was I not wrong.

The story switches between the perspective of Shaw and Lee, the two protagonists in this book. The pacing is somewhat slow in the beginning: Lee is a prisoner on the island and has to endure torture (which includes rape). I was kind of put off by how the first 1/3-1/2 of the story seemed to focus only on this and the internal struggles that both characters had to go through.

But then half-way, the story picks up and the physical struggle makes way for the emotional storm of Lee trying to piece his life back together. Even though the second half of the novel isn't as action-packed as the first half, I find myself enjoying it more. The struggle that both characters go through were realistic in my opinion and the pacing seemed a lot better. In the end, I would highly recommend this story for those who aren't afraid to read about the horrors of rape/torture and how two different people can come together in the end to find happiness.

I read this book at one sitting. I just couldn't put it down. And the "feel" of the book stuck with me for days. Definitely a great read. Though I'll reaffirm what's been said before. It's not for the faint of heart. It's not THAT bad...but it definitely has controversial themes. It's how they are handled that makes the book so good.

    Intense read!

Warning! There is rape and torture in this book. It's not an easy read but I'm glad I read it. I always find it hard to review books like this without spoilers. This is the story of a man held captive and broken and the man that is given the chance to save him. Is one human being worth your life's work? This journey helps both men learn who they are and what they want. I was left thinking about this book for days after. I recommend.
