When Lady Mingyu, one of the most sought-after elite literary courtesans in the Lotus Palace, is summoned by powerful General Deng to his residence, her worst fears are that he will want to "redeem" her to become his concubine. But when she finds him brutally murdered and knows she'll be considered a suspect, she has no choice but to seek out Wu Kaifeng, the one man who can help her. VERDICT The Tang Dynasty and the shadowy world of the pleasure district of Changan come to life in a story that is sure to enchant. [Xpress Reviews, 2/21/14.]—Kristin Ramsdell, emerita, California State Univ.-East Bay
Publishers Weekly
12/16/2013
Lin returns to Tang Dynasty China (setting of The Lotus Palace) for a tale strong in emotional subtlety but weak in suspense and mystery. Renowned courtesan Mingyu may shine like her namesake “bright jade” in the pleasure quarters of the Pingkang li, but when she discovers the gruesomely beheaded body of one of her high-ranking patrons, Constable Wu Kaifeng is immediately suspicious of the icy, self-possessed woman. As the ploddingly slow investigation brings the pair together, Kaifeng can’t help but be entranced by Mingyu. Even though Kaifeng once tortured Mingyu in an attempt to get information out of her, she’s still intrigued by his determined search for the truth. The courtship between the high-class courtesan and the street cop is well drawn and nuanced, but the murder mystery’s abrupt solution undercuts the otherwise satisfying ending. (Feb.)

Mingyu is a hostess at the Lotus Palace. She is celebrated for her grace and beauty through out the Pingkang li, but she is not happy. She accepts her fate. Her protector, General Deng, is returning to the city and desires her presence. When she arrives at his residence, she finds his body. Her automatic response is to summon Constable Wu Kaifeng. In the past he has been her adversary, but he is honest and intelligent. Can he find the General's killer? Will the attraction between these two grow? Jeannie Lin has written a meticulously researched story set in the Tang Dynasty. Mingyu is an amazing character who is beautiful and extremely intelligent. She is forced to live in a world where she has no freedom to control her destiny. Wu Kaifeng is a strong man with an intimidating presence. He is detail oriented and dedicated to finding the truth. He has honor but no money. They are opposites who are drawn together by their passion. They hide their deep emotions from each other and from the world. The story is filled with romance, secrets and revenge. It touched my heart. I couldn't put down The Jade Temptress. I loved the story! Jeannie Lin is a masterful storyteller. This book is a treasure.

Jeanni Lin¿s The Jade Temptress makes the reader believe dreams

Jeanni Lin’s The Jade Temptress makes the reader believe dreams really can come true. And not just small dreams. Big ones. After all, those are the best kinds of dreams to have, and the best kinds to come true. Mingyu and Wu Kaifeng are meant for each other, but it takes them a long time to realize and accept it, and so many obstacles have to be overcome to find peace and happiness. Nothing is easy in a Chinese Empire where conspiracy and murder abound, and every connection matters when it comes to power, greed, crime, control, and even an attempt to overthrow the emperor. Still, Mingyu seeks out Wu Kaifeng because she needs him, and not just because he’s the unyielding county magistrate, but also because she loves him, even if she won’t admit it, even to herself. He’s even worse at accepting his feelings for what they are, until he does, and then nothing stops him from courting the only woman he’s ever loved…and living happily ever after with her at his side. Pick up a Jeannie Lin story set in ancient China. They’re different, in so many great ways. Historicals at their best. Writing at its best. And romance to dream about.

Exotic and engaging, this murder mystery is a particularly enticing one to solve while we get a gorgeous glimpse of the orient in delicious detail, and a sexy love story between a courtesan and a constable. I highly recommend this book to all those who love a story set in ancient China, but also to those looking for a little change in the ordinary murder/suspense novel.

Ms Lin creates a magnetic push-pull chemistry between her characters, Constable Wu Kaifeng and Lady Mingyu. Mingyu is a beautiful courtesan from the pleasure house, Lotus Palace, who finds herself enmeshed in the murder of one of her "clients." Since this is not the first time Kaifeng and Mingyu have found themselves solving a murder together, it is interesting and exciting to see how they interact. A course in the cultural differences and the setting!

I was glued to the pages of this novel. I rarely read an ebook for review, but found this one on netgalley and couldn't stop racing through it. It's one of those you'll be happy you picked up.
