Meet the Author

His lifelong love of reading coupled with an overactive imagination fueled the creation of Jim McLaughlin's novels. Starting with comic books as a kid, Jim is never without a good book at his side. A career move to Chicago was the spark that ignited the story behind "The James Charade". The economic downturn set in motion the central theme in "The Leveler". "Two Billion Reasons to Kill???" features Burton James, the popular character first introduced to the world in "The James Charade".Born in Iowa and raised in Prairie Village, Kansas, Jim spent the majority of his career in the medical equipment industry, working for large companies before plunging headfirst into the wonderful world of entrepreneurship by starting and selling two successful medical equipment businesses in the Kansas City area. Now retired, Jim spends his time reading and writing. He loves to travel with his wife, is addicted to water sports, is lousy at golf but still likes to play, and spends his spare time in his bead studio where he practices the age old art of lampwork.Jim's favorite authors are Catherine Coulter (catherinecoulter.com), Lawrence Sanders (may God rest his soul), and Robert B. Parker (now writing in Heaven with Lawrence Sanders).

    Delightfully entertaining book

This is classic detective fiction where the protagonist is obscenely wealthy, extremely amusing, appealing to the ladies, and super smart. The writing is very well done, making the book very hard to put down. I read it cover to cover in one day, about 4 sessions.

    Boring & long-winded

The plot line was implausible, the characters poorly developed, and way too long. This book was in dire need of some intense editing. I'm unlikely to read anything else by this author.

    Pretty Good.

The story starts rather slow and takes a few chapters to get any action going. Once you get into the action its enjoyable to read. His writing is very clean with little foul language or sex. That's refreshing!

    VERY LONG READ

You need a lot more spare time to get through this. It is a good book and the characters are rather unique because they have access to a lot more things to work with than most people do. Also they are very, very wealthy. Burton would peel off thousands of dollars from a wad of cash he had on him at all times. His friends lived in huge mansions, drove great vehicles, ate at only the best restaurants. So, therefore, you may have a slightly hard time relating. But, enjoy, I did.

    Charade

A madcap, fun book. Quite a trip frrom beginning to end with twists and turns in every page. A great free book - a nice change from the erotic, vampire and the paranormal book!
    Thanks. B&N

    Really rather juvenile

Some books are slow getting started; some sputter to an unsatisfactory end and some, like this one, fall apart in the middle. The early chapters promised an interesting scam the scammers sting but about 200 pages in, it got silly and boring. The characters are cartoonish and one-dimensional.

    Must read!

Just the kind of mystery I enjoy! I think Burton James is destined to become my favorite 'detective'. It was a very enjoyable read ... complex ... but believable. Sorry to see the story end. Will watch for other books from this author.
