Children's Literature - Ellen Welty
Aimed at readers from eight to twelve years old, this overview of the first successful colony of English settlers in North America is full of the kinds of details that make history interesting. For example, the first group of colonists to arrive at Jamestown in 1606 was comprised of all men and boys; no women arrived until 1608. This curious fact makes historians believe that a permanent colony was not intended, at least not then. The book includes sidebar spotlights on individuals and on legislation that affected the colony. While each of the three ships had a captain, the designated leaders of the colony were not revealed until land was reached. John Smith, whose name is the most recognized today, was named as one of the leaders of the colony, to the dismay of many other men in the group. His ability to negotiate with the natives, however, saved the colonists' lives on several occasions. Some of the extra features in the book include a drawing of the layout of the fort based on archeological evidence, a map showing where the colony was in respect to other geographic features, and links for readers to find out more information. There is a timeline, an index, a list of the individuals who played important roles, a page describing the links to primary resources, and a glossary. While no single volume can hope to cover the subject thoroughly, this book, part of the "Cornerstones of Freedom" series provides a good springboard for further exploration. Recommended.
