Overview

Detective Philip Black, Pittsburgh Police Department, has solved every one of his seventeen cases as a detective. Five are awaiting the executioner's needle, and to Black's mind, deservedly so. The mayor has even tapped him for the city's highest award to coincide with Black's forthcoming promotion to sergeant along with the formation of his own homicide squad. Black knows his first pick for his squad will be his new partner, Detective Trevor Lyons, who as a uniformed police officer helped Black find key evidence that sent many of his cases to jail and death row.

Detective Black needs the job as a distraction. On New Year's Day, he signed off on terminating support for his comatose wife, the victim of a carjacking. As those emotions come to the forefront, Black gets a fresh case over his traditional New Year's Day breakfast with his twin brother, Brett. As Detective Black is about to investigate, he opens a package that was delivered specifically to him and is quite shocked to find a woman's breast wrapped in cellophane along with a set of GPS coordinates where the rest of the body will be discovered. Soon enough, another body is discovered, both killed the same way along with a note from the Biblical book of Jeremiah. This hits home to Black, from a secret long ago in his life he thought buried.

Due to the brutality of the crime, Black is assigned this case. Just like every one of his previous cases, the evidence falls into place and a suspect is arrested. However, little did Black know his career and solved cases were part of a plan set in motion nearly thirty years ago by a member of his own family. If the truth came to light, not only would Black's career be destroyed, but his life as well.
