Overview

The Jesus Record is a bittersweet testament to the late Rich Mullins, who died in an auto accident shortly before he would have started the album. The first disc of the two-CD set contains the demos for The Jesus Record, all of which are performed by Mullins alone, accompanied either by a piano or guitar. Mullins never had the opportunity to properly record these songs. Instead, the Ragamuffin Band recorded them officially, with vocalists like Phil Keaggy, Amy Grant and Michael W. Smith filling in for Mullins on vocals. It's an affecting tribute to Mullins' talent -- not only are the demos quite moving, but the completed record nearly matches those peaks. Either way, it's a nice way to say goodbye to one of the major forces in '90s CCM.

This album is very special because it was Rich Mullin's last. My very favorite song is 'My Deliverer', I still get goosebumps when I hear it. It is neat to hear the original recordings Rich made on a portable tape recorder, and then to hear how the Ragmuffin band and other friends put them into finsihed form. As following his tradition the lyrics are deep and focus on the one savior- JESUS

This is a truly moving album. Rich Mullins's worktapes that were recorded just a few weeks before he died in a car crash make this a one-of-a-kind piece. In several instances, the worktape versions are better than the finished, polished product on the second disc, at least for fans of singer-songwriter music. Many stars of contemporary Christian music sing on the fully-produced disc, and fans of contemporary Christian music will recognize several of the songs.

I was first attracted to this selection because of the new Advent classic "My Deliverer". I come to love several tracks, especially "Jesus" and "Hard to Get," which go beyond the traditional praise and worship songs to put the desire for increased faith that we all feel at some times to words and music. Although both discs are excellent, the demo disc is especially outstanding. The listener can really feel the power of a single voice and piano (or guitar).
