Overview

John Carter is a Civil War veteran who heads west to prospect for gold after the war. Taking refuge in a cave, he finds himself suddenly teleported onto an alien planet, known by the locals as "Barsoom." Faster and more agile in this new lower-gravity environment, Carter eventually wins the respect of the planet's nomadic tribe of green-skinned, four-armed warriors. But when the tribe abducts the princess of a rival humanoid clan, and Carter falls in love with her, the visitor from Earth is the only who can prevent the races from all-out war.

Burroughs' classic science fiction series has inspired the imaginations of countless writers, directors, artists, and even the adventurous spirit of the space race. This collection includes five novels from the series: The Princess of Mars; The Gods of Mars; The Warlord of Mars; Thuvia, Maid of Mars; and The Chessmen of Mars. It also includes a hyperlinked glossary of Barsoomian terms and a description of how to play Jetan, a Martian variation of chess.
