Overview

Written by Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine faculty and surgical residents, the second edition of The Johns Hopkins ABSITE Review Manual delivers comprehensive coverage of the American Board of Surgery In-Training Examination through two full-length practice tests. Both tests are based on actual key words from recent ABSITEs, and are accompanied by test review sections, which go over every practice test question and answer, providing rationales behind surgical decision-making.

ABSITE-style question format familiarizes readers with the test’s presentation and content. This edition features twice the number of questions as in the previous edition, offering even more opportunities for self-paced review. Rationales for correct and incorrect responses help to identify the test-taker’s strengths and weaknesses. A convenient companion website offers a complete online test bank to facilitate studying on the go and simulate the actual examination.

This book is ideal not only for those preparing for the ABSITE, but also for surgeons and residents studying for the general surgery qualifying exam and for all surgical residents seeking to review key topics during rotations.

Key Features:

  • Two full-length practice tests with 225 questions each, for total of 450 questions
  • Based on actual key words from recent ABSITEs
  • Companion website featuring an interactive question bank
  • High-quality questions and discussions by leaders in their fields
  • Key figures and tables, up-to-date cancer staging and treatment algorithms
  • Explanations are referenced to popular textbooks, journal articles, and websites

Description: The second edition of this general surgery review provides two full-length practice exams accompanied by concise yet thorough explanations of the questions and answers.
Purpose: The aim is to help prepare general surgery trainees for the in-service exam with two full-length practice exams, a critical component to adequate ABSITE preparation.
Audience: It is intended for general surgical trainees, but it also may prove valuable to residents wishing to review important points during rotations, as well as to residents preparing to take their qualifying exam.
Features: This review covers the full range of surgery topics encountered on the exam — trauma, head and neck, oncology, gastrointestinal, hepatobiliary, vascular, etc. The topics are weighted appropriately to mimic the ABSITE. It provides a full-length exam, followed by the answer key, and then the corresponding explanations grouped by topics. There are two exams, and the questions accurately mimic actual ABSITE questions. The index and glossary facilitate using this book to review particular topics.
Assessment: This second edition is a necessary part of all general surgery trainees' libraries. Its questions thoroughly test mastery of the material, and the accompanying explanations and associated references help achieve that mastery. This second edition not only updates the initial exam questions, it also provides an additional full-length exam. It is worth the investment for test preparation alone, but is also valuable for daily, topic-specific reviews.
