Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - William Ruhlmann
There is no dearth of Donna Summer compilations, dating back to 1979's On the Radio originally a two-LP set, then on one CD and including 1993's double-CD The Donna Summer Anthology. The Journey: The Very Best of Donna Summer seems intended to replace and update 1995's single-disc Endless Summer for American consumers. It contains all 14 of the singer's Top Ten pop hits in their short single edits an important consideration given that Summer was a disco diva whose tracks often went on at considerable length, including 1989's "This Time I Know It's for Real," licensed from Atlantic Records, as well as a selection of four of her many other Hot 100 hits, including 1999's ...

It contains all 14 of the singer's Top Ten pop hits in their short single edits an important consideration given that Summer was a disco diva whose tracks often went on at considerable length, including 1989's "This Time I Know It's for Real," licensed from Atlantic Records, as well as a selection of four of her many other Hot 100 hits, including 1999's number 79 chart entry "I Will Go With You Con Te PartirĂ³," licensed from Epic Records. The main disc concludes with two new songs, "That's the Way" and "Dream-a-Lot's Theme I Will Live for Love," produced by Giorgio Moroder, who produced most of Summer's hits of the 1970s and early '80s. The former is a modest pop song, but the latter is an ambitious disco anthem that aims to match the team's former glory, and largely succeeds. It is expanded past nine minutes on the bonus disc of extended remixes, along with a few old favorites and another new one, "You're So Beautiful," a tribal-styled dance track that was added to the album at the last minute, clocking in at nearly 11 minutes. Summer aficionados will be forced to pick the album up for its new material, but more casual fans who already have one of the many earlier Summer best-ofs in their collections don't need to add another one.

Journey: The very best of Donna Summer

What can I say! It's Donna Summer. No one can compare. She's the queen!!
I also recommend Endless Summer by Donna Summer. Some of the same material but without the extra disk. All her greats.

    Summer's Journey Not Over Yet

This is a great package for any newcomer to Donna Summer, but it hits a homerun with some sizzling, teasing new material loyal fans will relish. It has all the number ones and top 10 hits. The CD is called 'The Journey' and aims at telling the story. Sorely missing is 'Walk Away', a very important last effort cash-in single from Casablanca Records, 'Dinner With Gershwin', a regional hit that had alot of potential, but lacked the necessary promotion from Geffen Records, that Donna so desperately needed in the 1980s, and finally a cut from Donna's import L.P. 'Lady of the Night', which the single, 'The Hostage' originally began Donna's "journey to success" in music, were unfortunately left off. I would have taken those songs over the agonizing reappearances from an overcrowded mass of other Summer compilations of less successful songs such as 'State of Independence', and 'I Love You', which are appropriate for her 'Anthology' collection, but not here. The 'Journey' tale of Donna's music should have contained the most important singles during her career, that truly had some significant story behind them so buyers new and loyal would enjoy them as told in the accompanying book illustrates. On a very positive note, the bonus disc is refreshing with extended mixes of two peak-hour dance tracks, in which the dance-club community will very happily chew and digest. The two new dance tracks are what Summer fans have been waiting so long for, and eagerly wait for more. DJs are showing their approval as the songs are making their way into clubs across the states, while receiving overwhelming favorable airplay and dance-floor response- a place Donna Summer music is no stranger to, back home, where her songs belong- and this time, as icing on the cake, she teams up with her mainstay from the days of many hits - his majesty, maestro Giorgio Moroder. Who could ask for anything better? Now please, no more compilations! This CD earns a rating of 4 out of 5 because the new tracks are a must-have. Donna's voice and range are in excellent form, the production is top-notch, current and hitbound with the right promotion. Hopefully, one of the new tracks 'That's The Way' (originally intended for Gwen Stefani) will be released and remixed. Donna plays with her vocals cleverly, reminiscent of her delivery on earlier recordings - some whispered vocals, cooing, growling and of course, strong belting. This track is catchy and very radio-friendly, and should not be overlooked. It has all the elements to become a major hit for Donna Summer. A well-produced video couldn't hurt. My overall conclusion: 'The Journey' is a satisfying appetizer of (hopefully) what we are in store for to come--meaning the new tracks are excellent from every angle. Now it's time for the main course: a full-length CD of new material. My fingers remain crossed with much hope.

    WORTH IT!!

This CD is just great! 18 top hits from Donna (1974 - 1999), but the great part is the new songs!!!! That's the way: radio friendly, Dream a Lot's Theme (I Will Live for Love): fantastic Donna style song and You're so Beautiful: Should be released as a single too! Donna's vocals are impecabble as always and I am glad the 12 inch versions are included so you will not have to hunt for those rare CD singles! Donna deserves more promotion because she is great!! Glad I bought it!

Why no "Once Upon a Time"?

I cannot believe with all the DS compilations we have there is no mention of, in my mind two of her best ever recordings, the electro beats of "Now i Need You" and "Working the Midnight Shift". In the UK there has been a surge in electro music. The album "Once Upon a Time" is paramount. No one wants to hear the dreadful "Wanderer". Wise up! The one redeeming feature of this compilation is the addition of some new material. I have heard a rumour that "You're so beautiful" is tribal!!! I just give up! It's got to be one of the most tuneless types of dance music. If Donna wants another hit, and she wants it to cross over, she's gonna have to get Felix da Housecat to remix it. I have also just heard yet another 3 disc compilation will be in the shops soon, too and surprise surprise it is yet another un-imaginative compilation. I can only hope "Once Upon a Time" is remastered soon!
