Overview

"By skillfully weaving lean concepts into a childhood enterprise, readers are introduced to and prompted to start thinking about lean methodologies, and how they can positively impact their workspace and their organization as a whole. That this can be accomplished without becoming bogged down in sterile terminology that detracts from its value is a testament to the author's facility with the subject. Add it to the curriculum

We were having difficulty getting employee acceptance of efforts to go lean. After reading this book I added it to our lean curriculum. Trainees are now given a copy of this book the week before lean training begins and we have noticed a tremendous difference in employee 'buy in'. The employees also seem to grasp the concepts much faster having read this book as a prep. Simple, basic, effective, and interesting enough to be easily read in one evening.

    Simple but to the point

When I first started reading this book I was almost under the impression I was reading a book meant for middle school kids. The first few pages felt like that BUT once I started reading it I found myself learning something new on every page. After a couple of short chapters I began to see why the author wrote the book in this fashion, very simple...to get the point across without distracting the reader from the important points with examples or terminology that I would not be able to follow. This book will stay on my desk! Excellent work Mr Lenard.

    Good Training Material

After reading this book we decided to use the story line as an activity in our lean training program. Two teams set up lemonade stands. The only guidelines were that one stand used batch and queue systems, the other lean. In our next group of trainees we used coffee instead of lemonade (also mentioned in this book). We took our training to the streets so to speak. Interesting results. Lean rules! The trainees commented on how much easier this was to understand following the exercises and thereafter reading this book. Kudos to the author.

    Very informative

Thomas, whose review is above, shared this book with me. This book made sense to me also. We are now going lean and I really think that reading this book helped all of us understand what we were in for and basically what needed to be done. i'm now being trained to be a Lean Team Leader and I'll have all of my team read this book too. This book is a very good starting point. I've now ordered several other books on lean but am glad I read this one first.

    Clever description of lean

The way this book is written makes it easy to get a feel for the basics of lean enterprise. I did enjoy the fact that it is not written as an academic work but more like a novel. The story line and setting is rather simple but personally I feel it made the material easier to understand. Written as such you can see 'lean' in action and apply it to any industry, not just automobile manufacturing.

    Laying the foundation

This book is great for laying the foundation of lean manufacturing. I shared this book with colleagues and a group of entry level hourly employees. All were better informed as to the basic concepts of lean and were put at ease as far as some common misconceptions about what lean actually is. Very informative and does explain the basic philosophy behind lean. As many have stated, this book is not an advanced view so order accordingly. For some such as myself we need to understand the basic philosophy before attempting to study the advanced stages. A pre-requisite for lean implementation.

    Finally. Lean outside of manufacturing.

The first couple of pages went a little slow for me while the author was setting up the story. I thought it was going to be a boring book. But once the story begins to show the shortcomings of what he described as traditional business and how lean techniques address those problems I found it quite interesting. I actually finished the book in two days because the more I read, the more interesting it became. The lemonade stand idea was a really good idea. I do not work in manufacturing! This book took me away from the manufacturing side and allowed me to see lean for what it is, a smart approach for all industries, not just manufacturing. I found several shortcomings that I am guilty of in managing. I think that after reading this book I am ready to go back to some of the more complicated books I have tried to read in the past on lean. I think they will make more sense to me now. It was funny to see two kids learning how to apply lean to a lemonade stand when so many people in the business world have trouble understanding it. For under $20 it will be hard to find a better book on the fundamentals of lean manufacturing. I would like to see a book like this on how lean could be applied to construction. Consider that a recommendation to the author.
