Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal - Audio
09/01/2014
Gr 3–6—Palacio revisits Julian, the most disliked character from her debut novel, Wonder (Knopf, 2012). When Auggie Pullman first entered Beecher Prep, Julian was one of the students chosen to help him navigate the new school. Instead, Julian went out of his way to make life miserable for Auggie. But why? Was he just a bully or was there something else going on? And did he ever feel bad about his actions? Although it starts off predictably enough, Julian's story is full of surprises that emphasize the overall theme of compassion, not only for the victim, but also for the bully. Children will learn an important lesson about walking in another's footsteps when they discover what really motivates Julian's actions. Listeners may want to reread Wonder to refresh their memories. The narration by Michael Chamberlain is exceptional in capturing the whiny angst and defiance of a preteen child, while also managing to inject convincing notes of sincerity where appropriate. Schools who already have the first book will definitely want to add this follow-up to their collections, as it and Wonder are excellent character education resources for students and teachers.—Michaela Schied, Indian River Middle School, Philadelphia, NY

    So good!

This is a great sequel to wonder. It was so deep and I ended up liking Julian instead of hating him like before. I almost cried when I was reading this.

    5 Stars

I was one of the many people who fell completely in love with the book Wonder, which told the story of a boy who was born with a facial deformity. I fell in love with Auggie as I devoured Wonder in one sitting. In that book, Julian was the bully at the school that made things difficult for Auggie. When I saw that Julian's story was being released, I jumped at the opportunity to read it.

This work is short, approximately 84 pages, and can easily be read in a single sitting. The entire story is told from Julian's point of view. The first part of the story goes over some of the events that happen in Wonder. After reading Julian's point of view, I can understand why he acted as he did towards Auggie. There were times that I found myself feeling badly for Julian because of the lessons he was being taught by his family.

Julian finds himself spending time with his grandmother in France in the second part of the book. He tells his grandmother the events that had happened during the school year. After hearing what Julian tells her, she tells Julian her own story which is the most powerful part of this piece. His grandmother's story helps Julian and his family see the events concerning Auggie differently. While I was not convinced that his parents turn around was permanent, Julian's remorse seemed authentic.

I would definitely recommend this short story to anyone who enjoyed Wonder. Because this story is so closely tied to that book, I would recommend that Wonder be read prior to reading this piece. I look forward to future works from this author.

    Very good

Not as good as the first book but you know. Nice short read, and very enjoyable. (This is a short story, 88 pages, and in my opinion it is worth the money) I also though it answered a lot of questions you might have from the first book. If you have not read WONDER i dont reccomend you read this first. I wish there was more detail, but the book was still good. I love R. J. Palacio!!!!

    The Julian Chapter

This was a great book!! I highly recommend reading Wonder first and then reading this book. I only wish that this good book could only be longer considering it is 88 pages. However, this book is still very interesting! You should read The Julian Chapter.

    Great follow-up to Wonder!

Loved it! So great to see Julian's story. Wonderful message that we all make mistakes but the important thing is to learn from them and choose to do better going forward.

    I love this book

It really pulls on your heart strings. It is very beautiful. I have no more words.

Always be kind to everyone. You don't know what is going on in their life. Judging won't help anyone.

    Amazing book.

I thought that this book was great. It was the best book i have

read in a while. But before you read this book you should read the authers first book Wonder. If you read Wonder first it would make more sence to before the other book. So ya, it was an amazing book. The only think i would change is that i wish it had more pages. Hope you liked my review.
