Overview

The best-loved songs from this album have become part of our collective memory, especially the classic "The Bare Necessities." But what has in large part been forgotten is that the rest of the soundtrack is just as enjoyable. Even the instrumental intro to "The Bare Necessities" is moving. The zesty Louis Prima-led "I Wanna Be Like You" is also not to be missed, and the disc also includes an interview with the Sherman Brothers, who wrote the music for this jungle farce version of the Kipling classic. It also includes two songs originally composed for the movie by Terry Gilkyson before Walt Disney had the story rewritten as a light comedy.

I bought this for my almost 5 year old daughter and my son, age 2.5 years. They love it. I love that it introduces my kids to jazz and other types of music not found on modern kids CDs (and that I can hear something other than "Beauty & the Beast", "Little Mermaid" and "Aladin" for a change). Out of all the classic Disney soundtracks "Jungle Book" has some of the best songs (who doesn't know "The Bear Necessities"?) My daughter even asks me to be quiet so she can listen to the interview with the song writers. Included in the CD are some songs, orginially written for the movie, but not included because they were too dark. For the "Mary Poppins" fans, there is also a demo (during the interview section) of a song that was written for "Mary Poppins" but not used (I cannot imagine that movie with MORE songs), which was turned into Ka's lullaby. I haven't seen (or heard) the new "Princess & the Frog" movie, but I hope Disney has gone back to their roots (Aristocats, Jungle Book) and introduced today's youth to other types of music, not found on the Disney Channel. Now, if Disney would just rerelease the "Peter Pan" Soundtrack we'd be the happiest family on earth.
