Overview

The Jungle of Utt is a beautifully illustrated series of books all written in rhyme for the young and young at heart.

The stories tell of a young adventurer named Barnaby who, while sailing one day on the Sassaway Sea, got lost in a storm and is shipwrecked on the mystical Island of Skree. On the island Barnaby meets many wonderful animal friends who are different and new, and some who are peculiar too. We learn of the things they build and the exciting adventures they share together.

In Mystery of the Lake, the island's children go swimming in the lake and encounter a strange-looking creature that fills them with dread. Barnaby solves the mystery, proving the "monster" is just a figment of their imaginations.

K-Gr 3-Thomas's rhymed stories about a friendly community of animals on the Island of Skree are nothing but book versions of cheap Saturday cartoons from the 1960s. Krystoforski's depictions are stiff and literal. Done in difficult-to-see black ink against a grape-colored background, even the maps on the endpapers are bland. The author's rhyme struggles, as with his sole use of "but" to couple with the jungle's name. In Shipwrecked, a man describes how a storm tosses him onto the island where he meets two llamas that give him a tour and introduce Utt's residents. Inexplicably, he is asked to be mayor of the jungle. In Mystery, several youngsters discover what they perceive to be a scary monster and it is up to the mayor to investigate. This book has the advantage of better rhyme and more action, but a predictable ending keeps it in the minor leagues.-Gay Lynn Van Vleck, Henrico County Library, Glen Allen, VA Copyright 2004 Reed Business Information.

My three-year-old daughter loves this series! Although the books skew a little older, she loves the rhyme and the vivid illustrations.
