A lifesaving handbook for parents of children who are occasionally, or too often, “out of control” Includes a bound-in twenty-minute DVD featuring Dr. Kazdin and his staff illustrating key concepts of the Kazdin Method Most child-behavior books are filled with advice that sounds reasonable, fits with what parents already believe about child-rearing, and is—as Dr. Kazdin proves—guaranteed to fail. The Kazdin Method for Parenting the Defiant Child makes available to parents for the first time Dr. Kazdin’s proven program—one backed up by some of the most long-term and respected research devoted to any therapy for children.
Kazdin shatters decades’ worth of accumulated myths about tantrums, time-outs, punishments fitting the crime, and much more. With the practicality of Ferber and the warmth of Brazelton, Kazdin leads parents through every step of the Kazdin Method in action—how to use tone of voice, when and how to touch, how to lead your child in a “practice” session, how to adjust your approach for different-age children, how to involve siblings, and more. The program is temporary, but the results are permanent—for very young children, adolescents, and even beyond.

    It really works! I promise!

This is the best self help book I have EVER read. I don't normally write reviews but I am on this book because it is the BOMB. I was struggling with the behaviors of a foster child in my care until I read this book and implemented 'The Program'. Read this book and do just what Dr. Kazdin says and your life and your childs life WILL change. This isn't just another book written by some highbrow specialist. The elements of this program are based on scientific studies and evidenced based theories. He knows what he is talking about. It is not easy to implement because it is a different type of parenting than I have been taught - but it is worth the work and effort on my part to change my way of thinking and reacting to my child. I got results and we are all much happier for the change. Dr. Kazdin is now my hero!

Will improve the atmosphere at home & your relationships with your kids!

I'm a child therapist, and highly recommend this book. It comes with a DVD that illustrates the method. Basically, it teaches you to pick your battles, be consistent, and be very specific about the behavior you DO want. I find that a lot of parents expend a lot of energy telling their kids what NOT to do, and not much energy on what TO do.

A parenting methods book based on research, not opinion. Excellent

Alan's book written for general audiences has an excellent orientation for parents who want to change behaviors in their children and themselves. There are many suggestions for positive encouragement based on observational research in his lab at Yale. Definitely worth reading by professionals as well as parents.

Simple method for a complicated condition

I found this book very informative and easy to understand. The method is different but easy to understand. The book guide you step by step and answer all your questions about the method. As soon as I finish the introduction in the book I knew Dr. Kazdin was talking about me and my child.
