The Kid-Friendly Food Allergy Cookbook: More Than 150 Recipes That Are Wheat-Free, Gluten-Free, Dairy-Free, Nut-Free, Egg-Free, and Low in Sugar

Overview

Millions of children across the country have food sensitivities or allergies, and the number is on the rise. And most of these children don't get to eat cookies, for fear of the reaction they might have from the wheat, or the peanuts. Imagine the feeling a young child must have as they stand there watching their friends munch on cookies just out of Mom's oven, while they have to make do with yet another carrot stick.

Leslie Hammond knows that left-out feeling all too well. As a...

As a child she suffered from severe food allergies and would watch year after year as, when the birthday song had ended and she'd blown out the candles, her fancy party cake was whisked away and served to her friends, while she ate a dry rice cake. Now the mother of allergic children herself, Leslie vowed to spare her own children that trauma. She had developed over 100 recipes that will appeal to a kid's tastes. Unlike other food-allergy cookbooks already on the market, her recipes hardly ever call for the kinds of ingredients that would gross out any kid -- like tofu.

The book's recipes take into account all of the most common food sensitivities like wheat and gluten, peanuts, or dairy. Each recipe can be modified to fit the dietary needs to the child.

It's divided into three sections -- snacks, main dishes, and treats. Leslie and co-author Lynne Rominger also provide information about how to find what you need in a regular grocery store, instead of requiring a separate trip to the natural foods store. She writes from the perspective of an ordinary working mom, and doesn't design eating regimes that would take all day in the kitchen to satisfy.

With the recipes in this book, even the most sensitive child will get a cookie too.

    I Also Recommend:

    Really Good!

I found this cookbook the perfect balance between fancy food that adults would and kid friendly options. It has a very warm touch and include a lot of details on why certain substitues are used.

This cookbook is not friendly for all allergies

I bought this cookbook thinking that this would be the answer to finding allergy friendly food for my 2 yr old who is allergic to eggs and peanuts...I was wrong!! I agree all of the recipes are kid friendly but NOT ALLERGY FRIENDLY!! Every recpipe containes one or more allergens..yes on some the author give you ideas for substition(but not all recipes). Every recipe was gluten/wheat free...the author herself has a gluten/wheat allergy but no other allergies. I don't think this book should be marketed for all the allergies in the title...if you have a gluten/wheat allergy....I really think you would like this cookbook....if you have any other allergy..this isn't the answer! I already returned my copy and I am looking at cookbooks on the Food Allergy& Anaphylaxis Network website..foodallergy.org

    Awesome Book!

I have a child allergic to peanuts, wheat and eggs. This book is incrediable. Everything I made so far is delicious. My other child w/o allergies loves it to. You can't find anything like this anywhere else. It has all the kids favorites. Pizza, chicken nuggets, mac n cheeze, cookies ect.. I highly recommend this book to anyone with an allergy child. I don't write reviews. I had to with this one. Its awesome!

    Tried a few recipes and...

I can say that the buttermilk pancakes were the best tasting I have ever eaten. My kids loved them. We also tried the Mac-n-Cheese, it was incredible.

    Really for wheat allergies

This book has a lot of recipes for wheat allergies but as for milk and egg allergies, it just recommends replacing the items with milk or egg substitute or omitting the ingredients completely....which is not really that helpful if what you are looking for are creative recipes that focus on the foods you can use.

More than a cookbook, a source of information

I was beyond frustrated, now I feel so empowered to take on the world. My children are allergic to everything they love. I have not tried any of the recipes yet, but just the up-to-date information in this cookbook is amazing. More than telling you the recipes, it tells you how to find the ingredients. It was well thought out and worth every penny!!! Leslie & Lynne, I love you. Thanks for all of the blood and sweat that you poured over these pages. And most of all, for giving me the power to make them feel normal and just like everyone else!
