Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Do you love playing baseball and want to improve your skills? If the answer is yes, start working on the dozens of practice and drill ideas included in Fuerst's book. Begin with various stretches for all the major muscle groups, and always remember to cool down and stretch. Try to build stamina and do a variety of cross-training activities. Tips are included to improve running, throwing, hitting, and fielding. Some activities can be done individually, while others include two or more players. To improve pitching, throw through a tire swing or set up a paper target. Play a game of Pepper, Bucket O Balls, or Hot Potato to improve fielding skills. Special tips are highlighted and several celebrity profiles are included. Cartoon-like pen and ink illustrations, an index, and additional sources are given. So if you want to hear "its outtahere," "kiss it good-bye," "the gopher has been fed," or "circuit clout" when you smack a homerun, start working! 2002, Millbrook Press,

School Library Journal
Gr 3-5-A collection of fitness and skill tips. The initial chapter clarifies the difference between warming up, stretching, and cooling down, giving examples for each activity. Exercises can be done individually or with a few friends. Tips are included in the text and highlighted in green boxes throughout. Assorted quizzes question readers about what to do in hypothetical situations that may occur during a game. The layout is text dense and does not encourage reading straight through; readers may want to pick and choose exercises or focus on some of the other features. Cartoon pen-and-ink drawings contribute to the spirit of enjoyment in training well; there are a few small black-and-white photographs of well-known baseball stars. The book ends with suggestions for 10 baseball-based games. A "Skills 'n' Drills Progress Chart" is appended (with a suggestion to copy it). Supplemental fare.-Blair Christolon, Prince William Public Library System, Manassas, VA Copyright 2002 Cahners Business Information.

Putting 'Play' Back into Play Ball!

In a word: FUN! It's hard to believe that I could get my kids to (don't say it so loud) exercise -- and enjoy themselves at the same time. That's what this book does. That's it focuses on baseball, filled with lots of fun, skill-building drills, activites and games kids can do by themselves or with a few friends right in our own backyard. What a pleasure that kids can have fun playing without having to have a coach around to tell them what to do, or an oprganized practice. In a way, it's 'retro' to when I was a kid. My 10-year-old son (and 11-year-old daughter, who plays softball) liked it equally. And they even did a number of the exercises and drills together. (Now that's an accomplishment!) I haven't found a book quite like this and highly recommend it for kids, parents, coaches.
