Publishers Weekly
Kids get a lesson in managing their money in the paper-over-board The Kids' Guide to Money Cent$ by Keltie Thomas, illus. by Steve MacEachern. Readers follow three students with different spending and saving habits. As they prepare a report for school, the trio (and readers) learns about managing cash flow, getting a job, banking and credit cards, as well as scams. Quizzes (e.g., "What's Your Money Personality?"), sidebars, tips (called "2 Worth"), and historical trivia help to demonstrate the points. Copyright 2004 Reed Business Information.
Children's Literature
Money makes the world go around, right? Even if that is not so, it is an unavoidable part of the world we live in. The children of today won't be children long, so knowing what money is, why we need it, how (and why) to save it, how to make it and how to budget it will help them throughout their adolescent and adult lives. This book discusses these issues and many more from the perspectives of Alicia, Dan and Jeff, members of the Money Cent$ Gang. The book recognizes that people have different personalities, as well as vastly different money personalities. Bright, comic book-like color illustrations complete with speech bubbles appear on each page. Budgets, banks and interest, credit cards, the stock market, jobs for kids, fake money and philanthropy are topics discussed. The author is an award winning children's writer and editor. Recommended. 2004, Kids Can Press, Ages 9 to 12.

Gr 4-7-As a social-studies assignment, Alicia, Dan, and Jeff form the Money Cent$ Gang and embark on a journey into the world of consumerism, banks, credit cards, philanthropy, employment, and the stock market. Complex subjects are presented in short, easy-to-understand chapters. Thomas includes realistic examples of banking issues, quizzes, and suggestions on earning money and starting a business. Explanations are clear, concise, and age appropriate. Comic-strip scenes show the characters conversing through dialogue balloons about the various topics and provide specific examples (e.g., Jeff gets scammed when he answers an ad and doesn't receive the merchandise he thought was promised). The accessible layout and colorful cartoon artwork will grab readers' attention. Report writers and budding entrepreneurs will welcome this book. Even if you already own Gail Karlitz's Growing Money (Price Stern Sloan, 2001), you'll still want to add it.-Kathleen A.
