Overview

The bestselling author of The Kind Diet offers practical solutions for a healthier, more vibrant approach to new motherhood

When did making babies get to be so hard? Infertility is on the rise globally, affecting as many as one in six couples. But instead of considering diet and lifestyle factors, doctors pump their patients full of expensive and invasive fertility treatments. Once pregnant, women just accept that carrying a baby will be the gassy, swollen, irritable, sleepless nightmare that has become the new normal—and then assume that new motherhood will be just as challenging, from breastfeeding woes to screaming fits.

It doesn't have to be that way. In The Kind Mama, Alicia Silverstone has created a comprehensive and practical guide empowering women to take charge of their fertility, pregnancy, and first 6 months with baby. Drawing on her own experience, as well as that of obstetricians, midwives, nutritionists, holistic health counselors, and others, Silverstone offers advice on getting one's "baby house" in order through nutrient-rocking foods that heal and nourish, and, once pregnant, gentle ways to boost comfort, energy, and health during each trimester. She helps readers navigate everything from prenatal testing and birth plans to successful breastfeeding and creating a supportive "baby nest." The result is an authoritative, one-stop guide that empowers women to trust their instincts during this vital milestone, while helping them embark on a healthy and more vibrant path to motherhood.

Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble

Notwithstanding the film role that made her famous, Alicia Silverstone is not clueless. In fact, she has gained a well-earned reputation of healthy vegan living and animal rights advocate. Her 2009 book The Kind Diet won both enviable sales and high marks from reviewers and general readers. In The Kind Mama, this mother of a toddler boy shares the wisdom that she has received from prominent obstetricians, pediatricians, nutritionists, midwives, and other health experts. It contains recipes, guidelines, and tips that can make pregnancy and mama-hood easier. A trade paperback original.

Publishers Weekly

Actress Silverstone (The Kind Diet) advocates a kinder path to motherhood, offering advice on preparing for pregnancy, a guide to each trimester, welcoming the baby and lying-in, and the first six months and beyond. A passionate vegan and animal activist, Silverstone encourages readers to switch to a plant-based diet and forego such "nasty" items as meat, dairy, and processed foods (for those struggling with fertility, "The Kind Diet" works like a "baby magnet"). Along with personal wisdom, Silverstone has collected tips from experts including an integrative gynecologist, obstetricians, pediatricians, midwives and others. Though she takes diet and health seriously, the author infuses her text with humor, and writes in an engaging tone. In addition to her birth story, Silverstone discusses morning sickness, circumcision (not recommended) and the family bed (create a safe sleep sanctuary for the whole family). In "For Gentlemen Only" sections, she doles out useful tips for dads on how to be supportive partners. Health-conscious moms-to-be will enjoy and learn from this heart-centered guide. (Apr.)

An absolute must-read for current moms, future moms, and women i

An absolute must-read for current moms, future moms, and women in general. I've never really considered having kids and I still might not but this book made me look at pregnancy in a whole new light. It really doesn't have to be a miserable experience like so many people have come to accept as the norm. This book is comprehensive, cohesive, and very honestly and openly discusses all those controversial topics that nobody wants to talk about... including your doctor.

I love this book! Alicia Silverstone has been a huge inspiration

I love this book! Alicia Silverstone has been a huge inspiration to me since reading her first book The Kind Diet. I credit her for helping me lower my cholesterol and weight. I have had tendency of falling off the wagon, and I definitely feel the difference when I do, which reinforces the fact that this is the perfect way of life to be healthy, feel great, and live without the guilt of knowing that I'm contributing to animal suffering and environmental decline. I already have 2 boys and don't plan on having more kids, but I was excited to read the book and get some good parenting tips and yummy family friendly recipes. Since finishing the book I have noticed myself trying to be more patient with my boys and encouraging a more loving approach in my family. There are several things I have already been doing that she recommends and it was nice to read about it from another perspective and get validation that what I was doing was right in order to raise a loving, happy family. I am definitely back on the wagon now and feeling better than ever. In regards to the comment about the book not really being about fertility, it promotes healthy eating and a more peaceful way of life, which in turn promote fertility. Years ago, my husband and I tried for several months to conceive and didn't. Fast-forward a few years and The Kind Diet later, we conceived the same weekend we started trying. My body was in clean, tip-top shape and I went into the pregnancy feeling wonderful and in the end was able to have a 100% natural delivery which was far different from my first "Un-Kind" one which included Pitocin, and my poor little guy in NICU for 5 days from being stressed in-utero by my strong (Pitocin) contractions. I highly recommend this book to anyone looking to conceive, if you just had a baby, or already have your little ones. Thanks, Alicia!!

    I Also Recommend:

Alicia had written a book full of helpful information with sourc

Alicia had written a book full of helpful information with sources to back up nearly every sentence. I know that this book will not be for everyone and even with that understanding, I also know that this book will have a positive impact on everyone who reads it. An enjoyable experience is attainable and this book gives solutions for the root of the problem instead of otherwise putting a 'bandaid' over the issue. One of the greatest contributions this book brings is a specific section for not only the expecting mamas but the expecting papas.

If there is one thing I think perspective readers should know, it would be that this book is written for the purpose of helping others feel the greatest that they can and as empowered as is able.

Another great aspect of this book is that it can be just as useful for people adopting as well as carrying their own. It is an excellent guide for women to be in the optimal state of health and well being in order to enjoy their new family addition while also holding answers to mama/papa questions.

I hope the best for all the mamas/papas on their baby journey!!

Usually I am a fan of Alicia Silverstone( my copy of The Kind Diet is well worn), but I had a hard time with some of the advice she gives in this book. Even though I don't have children of my own, I would never even consider NOT getting them vaccinated.

    Not Impressed...

I was expecting more from a book with "Supercharged fertility" in the title, instead I got what constituted as a single chapter with lots of "fluffy" wording instead of actual useable advice. I was really hoping for a good alternative to all the fertility material out there that extolls the scientific breakthroughs, rather than getting yourself healthy first - and was excited when the book started out that way.... but it never "got off the ground" with the plan. The next thing I knew I turned a page that said "WooHoo Youre Pregnant!" and I was very surprised - I thought I missed some pages!
Anyone looking for a helpful book on natural fertility - skip this one, unless your idea of a book on fertility, pregnancy and birth consists of substituting the term "chichi" for vagina.
