Leo Tolstoy (Lev Nikolayevich Tolstoy) (1828-1910) was a Russian author who is widely considered to be one of the greatest writers of all time. He was born in Yasnaya Polyana, a large estate in the Tula region of Russia. The Tolstoys were a well-known family of old Russian nobility; he was connected to the grandest of Russian aristocracy. Alexander Pushkin was his fourth cousin. A master of realist fiction, Tolstoy enjoyed a career spanning more than six decades. He died in 1910 at the age of 82.
