About the Author

Henry Watson Fowler (1858–1933) formed a remarkable partnership with his brother, Francis. Together they wrote The King’s English (1906) and compiled The Concise Oxford Dictionary (1911).  After his brother’s death, Henry Fowler went on to write Modern English Usage, which made him a household name.

Francis George Fowler (1871–1918) was an English author and expert on language.  With his brother, Henry, he wrote The King’s English (1906) and compiled The Concise Oxford Dictionary (1911). They began working on Modern English Usage together, but Francis died before it was finished.
