My kids (9 year-olds) and I absolutely ADORED _The King's Gambit_! McNichol has given kids (and adults) a story of an unlikely young hero surmounting impossible--literally impossible--odds with the help of, of all people, his family and the heavenly host.  This is an excellent read for those kids who want fantasy that uplifts rather than degrades.  Well done!  I am looking forward to reading more of McNichol's work, now that I know where to find it!
