Overview

No other book ever written, with the possible exception of the Bible, has so dramatically influenced the course of civilization as the Koran. Yet this important text remains little understood in the West. Since its first publication in 1955, Professor A.J. Arberry's translation has been the finest one available, its magnificently written verse making the Koran accessible to a Western audience. Professor Arberry has rendered the Koran into clear and lyrical English while carefully preserving the incomparable artistry of the Arabic original. The Koran Interpreted is universally recognized as not only the most authoritative translation but also the most beautiful one in the English language.

When you are looking for pure words of God

Ever since 1981 I am regularly reading this Interpretation of Koran. It's a job well done by (Late) Arthur J Arberry. Those who are looking forward to pure words of God may try this Interpretation to have and develop the right feel and message that God expressed through His prophet. The efforts made by Mr. A J Arberry shall only be rewarded by God, Himslef. Thank you for keeping 'The Koran Interpreted' by 'Arthur J Arberry' in print.

A More Formal Translation of the Quran

Although the Qu'ran not the only key to an understanding of Islam, it is an essential part. In this translation Arberry has taken the Quran and used current English, which makes it far easier to read than many others, even, dare I say, the excellent Yusuf Ali text. I strongly recommend this edition for non-theists and non-Muslims since it not only reads well, but in this case, not having a commentary is a virtue - the Quran is left to speak for itself. For those wanting to read through the Quran cover-to-cover, Arberry's volume will get you off to a quick start. Another very good, perhaps even better English translation is Ahmed Ali's "Al Qu'ran: A Contemporary Translation (ISBN: 0691074992). But for those seeking a fuller understanding of this great text with full commentary and notes, see Ali's classic translation (ISBN: 0915957760).
