Three Novels of Family, Friends and What Really Matters

Kristin Hannah is one of today’s bestselling authors. Her books plumb the depths of friendship, the loyalty of sisters, the secrets mothers keep—the whole complex, meaningful world of important relationships. Here are three of her best, selected and edited by the Reader’s Digest.

Distant Shores A married couple is drifting apart, and a terrifying decision is made in an attempt to find a second chance at happiness. An exquisite reminder of the most precious gifts in life: friends and family, children and lovers, the strength to change, and the courage to forgive.

Between Sisters Two women who have been separated for more than two decades come together over the course of a Pacific Northwest summer, to try to become what they never were—a family.

Magic Hour A six-year old girl appears out of nowhere, speechless and alone. A child psychiatrist who has been shaken by a horrible public scandal is determined to reach her, risking everything to discover the truth.

Meet the Author

Kristin Hannah was born in September 1960 in Southern California; her family moved to western Washington when she was eight years old. After working in a trendy advertising agency, she decided to pursue a law career. She began writing in earnest when she became pregnant and was put on bed rest for five months. By the time her son was born, she'd finished a first draft and found an obsession. Since then, she has published twenty novels and become a fixture on the bestseller lists.

Reader’s Digest Condensed Books service has been satisfying readers for over 60 years. Launched in 1951, the series was originally a spinoff of the popular fiction supplements to Reader’s Digest Magazine. It quickly became a bestselling phenomenon standing on its own, publishing continuously since its launch, presently issuing six volumes annually, each volume containing four complete books. Now we are collecting the best among the hundreds of authors and thousands of titles we have used, each volume containing three titles by one author, modern classics by modern masters.
