The Lab Rats of Doctor Eclair

Overview

Readers are introduced to the weird world of Doctor Eclair, a bumbling scientist who is as devoted to his test animals as he is to his work.

Life in the lab takes on a strange new twist when a bolt of lightning strikes Eclair's hilltop tower and molecularly rearranges three of his research rats—turning them into super rodents. Putting their new powers to work, the trio joins Eclair in his quest to build the world's first artificial rat.

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Judy Katsh
The good Doctor Eclair treats his lab rats benevolently and they reciprocate-even when a lightning bolt transforms them into SUPER RATS! There's not much story here, but it's awfully hard to resist a book that takes place in a laboratory and where problems are solved through the application of good science. Plus, colorful, campy cartoons happily fill the pages.
School Library Journal
Gr 2-3After a lightning bolt gives three pampered lab rats, Niner, Blobber, and Ramelda, super powers, they join kindhearted Doctor Eclair in his quest to save lab animals the world over by helping him build a prototype mechanical lab rat, dubbed WingNut. Finding the giant tin rat careening out of control about the parking garage with Ramelda's offspring clinging precariously, the adult rodents avert disaster by cobbling together a giant mousetrap. Doctor Eclair declares that WingNut is "ready for a real scientific test"an intergalactic expedition. Uniformly unfocused backgrounds and jelly-bean colors give the computer-generated art a low-budget look, but Bianchi is experienced enough with this technique to integrate his pop-eyed figures into each scene, rather than leave them floating a bit aboveand occasional visual gags complement the story's breezy good humor.John Peters, New York Public Library
