WARRIORS - CRY TO THE STARS
BOOK ONE - AFTER THE WAR
Hollyspark suddenly froze in her steps, her black fur bristling along her spine as she stared ahead.
Right in front of her was the misty, ginger shape of a cat she didn't recognize. Green eyes stared back at her, and the star-flecked tom lifted his chin, poiting with his tail-tip towards something Hollyspark couldn't see. The black shecat blinked, and the strange flame-colored tom was gone.
"Hey... you okay?" a soft voice asked, and Hollyspark shook her head to clear it. The cat before her was a gray tabby tom with ginger paws, her brother, Fatepaw. Hollyspark, Stormheart, and Fatepaw, the children of Lionblaze and Cinderheart, had been very close siblings, and still were. Hollyspark sometimes wondered if they would inherit the power her father and uncle Jayfeather had, but nothing had happened to any of them so far that would suggest power.
"Yah, I'm fine," the black shecat mewed quickly, shaking her fur. "Just... a bit tired." Mabye she was seeing things. A StarClan cat wouldn't have appeared to her, of all cats.
"You sure?" Fatepaw pressed, tipping his head to one side. "You seemed kind of... sad. Depressed. What's bothering you?"
Hollyspark cast a glance over at Grasspelt and Blossomfall. Her green eyes narrowed as she watched Blossomfall run her tounge over her mate's ear. Quickly, she turned back to her brother, who's sharp eyes were narrowing.
"You worried about them?" Fatepaw mewed, flicking his tail in the two cats' direction. "I've been too. What must StarClan think, Blossomfall choosing a mate from another Clan? And Grasspelt doing the same? I never suspected anything, until he came to live here."
"Yah," Hollyspark meowed, relieved that her brother hadn't guessed her real reasons for worry and sadness. Changing the subject, the small shecat asked, "Blossomfall's kits are coming soon, right?"
The medicine cat apprentice nodded. "Very soon. Well, I'd better go collect that marigold now, or Jayfeather will get mad at me." Fatepaw smiled, flicking his tail-tip over Hollyspark's ear as he trotted off. "See you later."
The black shecat watched him go, vanishing into the thorn tunnel. A few moments later, a hunting patrol trotted in, laded with freshkill.
The patrol's leader, Ivypool, and Hollyspark's former mentor, padded past, smiling at her former apprentice. Behind the silver-and-white tabby was Ivypool's mate, the black-and-white tom Toadstep. Also on the patrol was Bumblestripe, a very light gray tabby tom, and his son, a large pale gray tom named Dovestorm.
"Nice catch," the black shecat complimented the hunting patrol as they headed for the freshkill pile. Hollyspark followed them, watching as they deposited their freshkill and chose pieces for themselves.
Lilypatch, a dark brown tabby shecat with white patches, trotted over and lay down beside Hollyspark. "Hi!" she mewed cheerfully, her amber eyes bright.
"Hello," Hollyspark meowed, watching the rest of the patrol settle down. Dovestorm cast a glance at her, before quickly turning back towards the prey pile.
Lilypatch nudged Hollyspark, a smile on her face. "You should talk to him sometime."
"Who?" the black shecat mewed, staring across the clearing towards Grasspelt and Blossomfall again.
"Never mind," the dark tabby muttered, rolling her amber eyes. "It seems you're to blind to see it anyway."
Hollyspark looked at her friend in surprise, but turned away. Whatever Lilypatch meant, it didn't really matter.
