Pulitzer-nominated reporter, Simon Stephenson knows he must kill the mythological creature hunting on Nantucket. A mysterious French alchemist and a loveable Greek hit man tell him so. Billions of dollars and lives are at stake – not to mention the story of the century. Trouble is, he's fallen in love with it. And she doesn't want him to write the story. She wants something else. Something only he can give.

Following a bloody trail of ancient coins, Simon confronts a diabolical conspiracy and his own family’s dark secrets. Meanwhile, his tennis-champion fiancée has become bridezilla, and a gorgeous TV reporter has her own intentions. Battling panic attacks and pursued by a host of nasty characters, from deadly alchemists and virulent beasts, to a sleazy rival reporter and a corrupt sheriff, Simon faces a world where no one is what they seem. Not even himself.

I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed The Last Ancient. The book opens up with reporter Simon Stephenson investigating some bizarre crimes in the Nantucket area. Strange, ancient coines are left on each crime scene, and the search leads him on a journey through mythology, numismatics, the occult, and alchemy. Mystery and the supernatural blend and mix in this well-written novel. Simon is an intriguing protagonist, and he’s easy to relate to as well. His struggles, especially when he discovered more about his own family’s heritage, felt very real. The plot is what was most engaging about this book though, and it kept me at the edge of my seat from start to end. A creative, suspenseful novel that combines several genres masterfully, and provides an unique reading experience. I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Reporter Simon Stephenson is sent on a mission to solve crimes around Nantucket. Not only are the crimes bizarre, but ancient coins are found around each crime scene. Simon is not quite prepared as he sets out to solve this mystery. He comes in contact with some mythological beings, the occult and much, much more. It is a battle he must fight to find the truth. An adventure filled with surprises, secrets, mystery, action and creatures to fight off, some human and others well.... not human! I liked Simon, he was an average guy with a past that haunts him, and secrets he must face. I liked the originality of the story, there were enough surprises and secrets revealed to keep me up late at night. I feel those who like adventure/mystery/mythology/fantasy will enjoy this read.
