Library Journal
This slim book addresses the issue of periodization in early modern European history: when did the Renaissance end and the push to modernity begin, and what were the characteristics and impulses of each period? As he has shown in previous books, e.g., The Struggle for Stability in Early Modern Europe, classicist Rabb (Renaissance & early modern history, Princeton Univ.) is a master at simplifying complicated historical questions without getting bogged down in trivialities or technicalities. His use of examples from Renaissance painting and sculpture to illustrate changes in mood throughout the period is masterly. And the book's sweep-from the Middle Ages to modernity-is certainly ambitious. That said, there is one problem with this excellent volume: its content is probably too condensed to satisfy the professional historian and too general to meet the needs of the fledgling reader. As a supplementary text on early modern Europe, however, where periodization remains a confusing and contentious question, it will prove very helpful. As always, Rabb's prose is supple and lucid-the book is a real pleasure to read. Recommended for academic libraries and large general collections.-David Keymer, Modesto, CA Copyright 2006 Reed Business Information.
