    more from this reviewer

"Sugh as in sugar, Rue as in rue the goddamn day"

Crumley has recently passed away, but he left behind one of the great crime novels of all time. Forget what you learned from Sherlock and Poirot and strap yourself in for a cocaine-addled lesson in life from C.W. Sughrue; a P.I. who is seldom sober but never wrong.

    Best of the Best

There are few authors so adept at making a hero seem human to the reader. Crumley is the acknowledged master. Gone are the days of dapper detectives getting all of the girls and solving the case through a series of simple deductions. Crumley drags you through the gritty, harsh realities of detecting, while simultaneously allowing his hero to have flaws and feelings...and a very unique code of ethics. This book was required reading in a Mystery Fiction class I took in college, and remains to this day the book that I compare all others to. I've read...and re-read...all of the books that I could obtain by this author, and hunger for more. It is worthy of note that another very talented author, Neal Stephenson also holds Crumley's work in high regard, as his book 'Zodiac' was written in his best Crumley style. Buy this book, read it slowly, and experience what I consider to be the best of the genre. You'll be back to buy other James Crumley novels and waiting eagerly for his next release.

    Best detective novel ever written

I bought this book some years ago because I liked the picture of the bulldog on the cover. I didn't know what I was getting myself into. C.W. Sughrue's El Camino speeds through the West--from Montano to California, then back again--like a bat out of hell, searching for a safe harbor. He finds it, at last, 'where he hangs his hangover.' Every now and then I run into someone who has read Crumley, and we wind up reciting lines from 'Dancing Bear' and 'The Mexican Tree Duck' for hours. I once read that Rolling Stone said 'The Last Good Kiss' is the last good hard-boiled fiction, and I truly agree.
