The Legend of Bagger Vance (Original Soundtrack)

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Jane Komarov
Rachel Portman's score for The Legend of Bagger Vance is tuneful, emblematic, and heartfelt. First impressions will be sealed when listening to her jubilant music, and this is one soundtrack that the listener can enjoy and comprehend even before seeing the movie.
The youthful exuberance of the film's hero, Junuh Matt Damon, emblazons "Junuh Sees the Field," the wisdom and mystery of his caddy Bagger Vance Will Smith soars in "Bagger Leaves," and the realm of the American South in the 1930's is musically expressed with great sophistication in "Savannah Needs a Hero." Portman favors simple melodic lines, usually played by a single instrument, in many cases a lone trumpet or clarinet, with an equally sparse accompaniment of harp or strings. She uses her instrumental palette judiciously, swelling with full orchestra only sporadically. Also included are three classic period recordings by Duke Ellington "Mood Indigo", Fats Waller "My Best Wishes", and the lesser known Mugsy Spanier "Bluin' the Blues", providing a perfect complement to Portman's inspired score.
