Editorial Reviews

VOYA - Rochelle Garfinkel
True to the title, this small volume is a nitty-gritty guide to social media for the librarian looking to embark on a social media campaign. Solomon walks the reader through all aspects to consider before committing to a particular tool and how to help library staff understand how a social media campaign is different from typical public relations tasks. The design of the book allows one to read each paragraph heading, and the "bottom line" statement of each small section, only delving deeply into areas for which the nitty-gritty details are still needed. Therefore, it will be useful to staff at many levels throughout the library. Indeed, there is a wealth of information in this slim volume for a librarian who is adept at using social media as well as a conservative library director who views it as a passing fad. The Librarian's Nitty-Gritty Guide To Social Media will help a library staff as a whole develop a comprehensive and effective social media plan: figuring out how to reach particular patrons (teens may be on a different platform than adults); earn social capital; and manage a library's online reputation in the long run. It is sparsely illustrated, with plenty of tables and footnotes for the librarian who wants more background statistics and studies. The chapter titled "Teens and Social Media: Testing Assumptions" will likely be of particular interest to Voya readers, but this book is about libraries using social media to reach all patrons in general rather than about reaching teens in particular. If readers are trying to convince colleagues that a social media campaign is a worthwhile project to spend time on, this book will support the argument and walk them through a process of planning it out before embarking on the campaign itself. Library Journal
Many libraries have ventured—some by dipping their toes, others by plunging headfirst—into the world of social media; in too many cases, however, they didn't do so in a strategic manner and aren't seeing a positive return on their investment. Solomon (library services mgr., Ohio Public Information Network) presents a how-to guide that is equally helpful to those first starting out and to those who have been posting for a while but are still finding themselves treading water. Similar to Ned Potter's The Library Marketing Toolkit, this title provides case studies of libraries that have excelled with their marketing efforts. Solomon's in-depth analysis of what success is and how to measure it to gain support from stakeholders will be useful to those who must constantly prove that their social media efforts are a justified use of staff time. Especially helpful are the detailed sample postings that not only give suggestions for libraries to model but also examine unsuccessful posts and explain what makes them less than desirable. VERDICT The Librarian's Nitty-Gritty Guide to Social Media provides successful formulas for modeling social media goals, strategies, and content calendars.—Kendra Auberry, Martin Cty. Lib. Syst., Stuart, FL
