Children's LiteratureThis extremely attractive book for children shows and tells about the life cycle of a beetle. Information is put together in sections that are labeled "Bunches of beetles," "What is a beetle?" "What is a life cycle?" "The cycle begins," "Bursting out," "The pupal stage," "Changing form," "All grown up," "Finding a mate," "On land and in water," "Feeding time," "Beetle defenses," "Dangers to beetles," and "Helping beetles." There are interesting sub topics within those sections. In "Bursting out" the sub topics are "Breaking through," "Different larvae," "Food for larvae," and "Outgrowing its skin." There's a sense of humor in some of these sub topics such as the larvae seeking out leaves labeled "Stick to it!" In the "Changing form section" it is "Get me out of here!" The use of words and expressions is very good for all children since it lends humor to the book. The photographs are extremely clear and labeled. The cover commands exploration of the book. The vocabulary is controlled for a wide range of reading and interest. A glossary and index are included as well as a listing of websites. This is a Bobbie Kalman Book and part of "The Life Cycle" series. Best of all it is a treasure house of information paperback that is affordable for home and school and library. 2004, Crabtree Publishing Company, and Ages 8 to 12.
