Barnes & Noble - Andrew Velez
A taut suspense thriller, The Life of David Gale tells the story of a respected professor and death penalty opponent Kevin Spacey who, by a bizarre twist of fate, finds himself on Death Row for the rape and murder of a fellow activist. With only three days left before his execution, Gale gives an interview to a reporter Kate Winslet who takes up his cause and tries save his life. Director Alan Parker The Commitments, Angela's Ashes renders the film a family affair by recruiting his sons, Alex and Jake, to compose the score. Alex Parker's background in contemporary music -- evident in the rocker "Media Frenzy" -- and his brother's classical training come together in a tapestry of richly varied sounds and textures. "Another Bleeding Heart" opens the disc with a mix of blues and ambient sounds written and performed by Alex Parker. From there, the score's mood shifts with the dark orchestral melody of "Almost Martyrs." Other highlights include Latin duo Correo Aereo's burst of blazing flamenco beats on "La Pena Huasteca" and blues singer Toni Price's heart-tugging "Just to Hear Your Voice." The different musical styles work together beautifully. A representative example is "Arrest/Bitsey Runs/Hospital," in which ambient drum sounds race alongside the orchestra, culminating in an intricate passage that mirrors the film's dark drama.
All Music Guide - William Ruhlmann
Director Alan Parker's The Life of David Gale is a drama about an opponent of the death penalty who, ironically, finds himself on death row. For the score, Parker employed his two musician sons, Jake Parker, who is classically trained, and Alex Parker, an audio engineer and multi-instrumentalist whose field is popular music. The two trade off on different aspects of the thriller, with Jake Parker, for example, writing the sad, stately orchestral piece that is the title track, while Alex Parker writes and performs the funky theme song "Another Bleeding Heart," which has some of the gritty feel of A3's "Woke up This Morning" used as the theme for The Sopranos. Much of the score reflects the suspenseful aspects of the plot, no matter which Parker son is contributing. And then there are examples of source music such as Correo Aereo's "La Peña Huasteca" and Toni Price's "Just to Hear Your Voice," with the whole thing ending on the aria "Tu Che Di Gel Sei Cinta" from Puccini's opera Turandot. It's a mixture of music that may work in individual moments during the film and as a souvenir of the film, but that seems random as a purely aural experience, a typical weakness of soundtrack albums. [The CD has been enhanced to include the film's trailer, playable on computer.]
