THE LIFE OF VITELLIUS is one of the most important ancient sources of history for the early Imperial period, as well as the life of Roman Emperor Vitellius. Aulus Vitellius Germanicus Augustus (15-69 AD) was the third of four emperors to hold power in 69 AD, the "Year of the Four Emperors." After a distinguished military career, Vitellius was appointed commander of the armies of Germania Inferior in 68 by Galba, a position he used to plan an uprising against the emperor. After defeating the forces of Otho, Vitellius ruled for eight months before he was deposed by Vespasian.
