Overview

(1st in "The Cazalet Chronicle"series)

In this, the first book of THE CAZALET CHRONCILE, it is 1937 and the WW II is only a distant cloud on the horizon As the various Cazalet households prepare for their summer pilgrimage to the family estate in Sussex, we meet the entire cast. There's bluff, hearty Edward, in love with but by no means faithful to his wife, Villy; Hugh, wounded in the Great War, but devoted to pregnant Sybil; Rupert, who worships the body if not the mind of his child-bride, Zoe; and Rachel, the spinster sister, conducting a desperate clandestine love affair under the family roof. With her instinctive sense of the British social order, Elizabeth Jane Howard has created a new masterpiece in the tradition of THE FORSYTE SAGA, UPSTAIRS, DOWNSTAIRS, and THE SHELL SEEKERS.

"Vivid and compulsively readable." (The Sunday Telegraph)

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly - Publisher's Weekly
With great historical accuracy, this second installment in the Cazalet Chronicle follows The Light Years . (Mar.)
Library Journal
In 1937 the three Cazelet brothers gather their respective families and head for the family manse in the heart of Sussex for their annual summer holiday. Howard is expert at creating detailed physical environments for her characters, habitats that often reveal just as much about the Cazelets as their words or actions do. The publisher compares The Light Years to Rosamund Pilcher's recent best seller The Shell Seekers (LJ 1/88), but the characters on the whole lack the passion, warmth, and depth of feeling of Pilcher's. Howard's family saga is well written, however; she has considerable literary talent. A sequel concentrating on the interesting scions of the Cazelet dynasty would be welcome. Recommended.-- Lydia Bur ruel Johnson, Mesa P.L., Ariz.
