Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal
K-Gr 4—This beautiful book of prayers from the Christian tradition is organized by themes as varied as "The Christian year" and "Sad times," each of which is further subdivided. For example, "Day-by-day prayers" has subsections named for the days of the week. Each page is enhanced by sidebars that are headed with the chapter title and contain short Bible verses or quotes. Attribution is made whenever possible; prayers without such information are the original work of the author. Each prayer's first word is set with an initial capital in order to place it apart from its page-mates, though some are accompanied by titles and others with a salutation, which creates a visual continuity problem; just where does one prayer end and the next begin? The selections represent various genres—thanks giving, petition, praise, penitence, supplication—and though their quality is uneven, most will find an audience. Hall's naïf depictions of pastoral scenes and of God's creatures add to the book's general effect of calm, and the resultant volume is one that begs to be browsed.—Lisa Egly Lehmuller, St. Patrick's Catholic School, Charlotte, NC
